SURANA
mysterious | compassionate | careful
Get up.
Surana's head shot up, looking around worriedly. Get up, please. The voice whispered in her head, and she listened closely. It sounded high-pitched and small, like Meto, but he was sleeping soundly, curled up next to her massive body. He was significantly smaller than her, but she would know if he was speaking, moving, anything like that. He wasn't. If you don't get up, I'll die. Who is that?, she wondered. No matter what, though, Surana was determined to figure out what this voice meant. She nudged her body against Meto's and he stirred, waking slowly. "Get up, we have to go." "What?" he grumbled. "Where? Why?" |
"Stop asking questions," she replied, silencing him. More gently, she said, "Someone is in need of our assistance."
Meto perked up. They were well-known healers and merchants, selling a service and adopting out stray familiars. If someone needed help, they were always on the case. It was strange, however, as Surana had never heard this voice before. And now that she thought about it, too, it wasn't Meto's voice. It was... another dragon. It was soft, gentle, but concerned and urgent-sounding. It had the distinctive chirp of a Skydancer, and so that's what Surana decided she'd look for. She didn't know if it was intuition, or just a stupid guess, but a Skydancer was out there somewhere, hurting.
Surana poked her head outside the cave, and then pulled the rest of her body through the almost too small opening. Meto showed up beside her, and looked at her, resolve in his eyes. They both nodded, spread their wings, and took off.
The voice guided her to the Windswept Plateau. It was much brighter than the dark, shadowed forest they'd been living in, located in the Tangled Wood. It took them only a short time to see a large Guardian and a small, frail Skydancer slowly crossing the Plateau. They were joined by a frantic Ridgeback, and another Skydancer– larger, a male. The Skydancer, although weak and sickly, had her head raised in the air, pointed at the sky. Her expression was one of relief, showing through pain. Surana began to fly closer, and then the Skydancer smiled, looking directly at Surana.
