Biography

Wisp decided from an early age that the Windswept Plateau was not for her. She knew that as a Mirror, she would never be able to fly through the Twisting Crescendo as Wind dragons are supposed to. She eventually bid her clan farewell, telling them that she wanted to explore more of the world. Although that much was true, she did not mention that she wanted to find a place with, well, more ground to run on. When it came time to leave, she made her way to the highest point she could, set her sights on the Starfall Isles, and leapt. The warm breezes of the Reedcleft Ascent gave her a bit more altitude, as if the land itself was wishing her well on her journey. With wings outstretched, she glided across the bay, landing with a Wind dragon's grace in the Crystalspine Reaches.

The territory of the Arcane dragons took some getting used to. Gravity did not always seem to work in the way one would expect, but she soon learned to use that to her advantage when hunting. Her gliding skills allowed her to move quickly between ledges and the occasional floating chunk of stone. After a short while, she began to feel at home.

One night, as she found a nice, sheltered spot to sleep high up in the Reaches, she stared out over the rest of the territory. She could see the observatory off in the distance, high atop the Focal Point, and even this late in the evening, she could see light coming from inside. As she let her gaze drift downward, she saw something that took her breath away. Far below her was a forest. She had caught glimpses of it in the daylight before, but now, at night, it seemed as though she was looking down at the same infinity of stars that glowed in the sky above her. After staring down for some time, she decided that sleep could wait, and she was soon climbing her way down.

When she reached the forest, she saw that the glow she had seen from her perch was actually the moonlight reflecting off of more flowers than she had ever seen. She made her way slowly through the trees, but the beauty of the place soon had her distracted from her surroundings. After some time had passed, she realized that she no longer knew which way she had come from. She searched until her smaller eyes picked up the heat from her footprints. Realizing that the heat would dissipate quickly in the cool evening, she hurried to find her way back out. She cursed her carelessness as she followed her rapidly fading trail. Her wandering a had been aimless, and her footsteps looped and turned often. Soon, she realized that she could no longer see heat on the ground. Guessing at the direction of the Reaches, she set out, carefully listening to the sounds of the woods around her.

Suddenly, she heard movement. Dropping to the ground, she listened for a direction, but she heard no further sounds. After a while, she took a few cautious steps forward. Suddenly, she heard crashing in the underbrush. Without taking the time to discover the source, she bolted through the woods, leaping over fallen logs and ducking under low branches. Suddenly, the ground dropped away underneath her as she leaped over a large boulder. She extended her wings and glided over the large crevasse, landing safely on the other side. As she sat panting, scanning the forest behind her for any sign of her pursuer, she suddenly heard a voice behind her.

"Hey, where did you learn to glide like that?"

She spun around and stared speechless. Another Mirror stood not far from her, looking at her expectantly. His scales were green with a striped pattern that made his shape hard to discern in the moonlight, and his dark wings seemed to fade away into the forest behind him. When she did not answer him, he squinted and looked more closely at her.

"Ah, Wind. That explains it."

"Explains what?" Wisp asked, finally finding her voice again.

"So you can talk," the green Mirror responded with a grin, "It explains your gliding. A lot of Mirrors wouldn't have made it across that ravine, particularly when surprised by it. But, I've heard that flying comes easily to Wind dragons, even for our kind."

Wisp continued to watch the stranger cautiously. She knew that she was trespassing in Arcane territory, and so had made sure to avoid contact with any of the dragons in the area. This dragon's otherworldly magenta eyes clearly marked him as Arcane, and she prepared herself for an attack.

"You have a name?" he asked.

"Wisp," she answered after a moment. He did not seem hostile, but she wondered if he was just toying with her.

"I'm Jinx," he responded, "of Clan Runeward. I'm guessing you have already noticed that it's not a good idea to wander the Starwood Strand by yourself. It's more dangerous than it appears."

"If you just point me in the right direction, I'll leave," Wisp said quickly. She hoped that if she left and did not return, Jinx would forgive her for trespassing in his clan's territory.

"But why would you want to leave?" he asked, "This is a beautiful place once you know how to avoid the dangers. If you follow me back to the rest of the pack, we could teach you. After all, if you are part of the pack, you aren't trespassing." He grinned as Wisp tensed at his words. She considered her options. Jinx was clearly much older than she was, and he was clearly a seasoned hunter. She could run, but he knew the forest, and even if she did manage to elude him, she was now hopelessly lost. And the more she thought about it, the more she realized how much she missed having other dragons around to talk to and hunt with.

"Well," Jinx said, interrupting her thoughts, "I'm heading back. You can come with me or not." He nodded in the direction of a small stream. "If you follow that, it will eventually take you back out of the woods. Then you can skirt the edge of the trees until you find where you came in." With that, he turned around and walked back into the trees.

Wisp stared at the stream. Fallen flowers danced on the surface, catching the moonlight as though trying to beckon the stars down from the sky. She turned and looked into the forest where Jinx had vanished. Then, she stood up, shook off the leaves and branches from her sprint through the trees, and stepped into the darkness after Jinx.
