Aether started with a very poor upbringing, and when his parents left the picture, he vowed to make a name for himself to provide a more comfortable lifestyle for himself and his adopted younger sister. Unfortunately, in his climb to success, he got caught up in the politics and the money and the notoriety. Over time he became truly materialistic and cold, losing touch with himself and his true motivations. He lost contact with his sister, whom he was doing this all for, as she saw through him and dropped him when he became someone else entirely, too focused on his image and his connections. He remains a shell of himself, now having realized the cost of his climb to the top. He's surrounded by fake friends and allies, and even a mate who stays with him only for the political power and to preserve her image. He got everything he ever wanted, but lost it all in the process.
