Biography

A single egg, pulsating with a faint blue light, rested against a gnarled tree on a small island at the southern border of the Driftwood Drag. Hollow shells of rotten eggs sat around it, forming a wall of decay to protect it from the elements. They could only protect the last surviving egg for so long, however. The usual soft rustle of wind through trees and the distant chirps of wildlife suddenly erupted into screeches and roars. Two dragons clashed in the sky above, fighting viciously in the name of their deities. One sunk its claws and teeth into the other before folding its wings in, allowing the two to freefall rapidly. The other frantically flapped its wings, struggling to yank itself away, but it was useless. They both slammed down hard into the ground, causing a small quake beneath them. Jaws snapped, claws swiped, and tails swung to and fro as they fought. The lonely egg became an unintended victim as a thrashing tail broke through the rotten eggs and sent the one intact egg tumbling away.

The egg rolled over the edge of the island and into the water. With nothing to stop it, it sunk down into the depths of the Leviathan Trench. It passed by long sunken ship wreckages, ancient carvings in the trench walls, and strange glowing creatures as it fell deeper and deeper. The beams of light gleaming down from the surface slowly tapered out until the egg itself was the only source of light in a world of total darkness. The egg still hadn’t come close to the bottom of the trench when the intense pressure began to form cracks on its surface. Water began to seep in, causing the creature inside the egg to stir in discomfort. Eventually, the weight of the water forced a hole through the egg’s shell, flooding it instantly. The infant dragon inside wiggled his limbs, pushing himself out of the broken shell and clumsily paddling through the water, trying to find air.

It was a dire circumstance for the baby dragon, but by what could only be considered a miracle, he survived. Some unknown thing wrapped around his tiny body, moving it through the water, and into a cavern in the wall of the trench. The baby dragon was pushed up into a pocket of air, where he gasped and coughed up what water he had inhaled. It was there he was raised by something unknown, hidden in the pitch blackness of the trench. Whatever had saved him from drowning would bring him fish and plants to eat, and occasionally, some barnacles or coral that he could kick around and play with.

He learned how to “see” where there was no light from his savior, as the only sound it made were clicks. It started out as playful mimicry when he clicked his tongue, but he eventually began to grasp that the noise he made echoed back differently depending on what was in front of him. With the ability to navigate and growing curiosity, he eventually began to venture into the waters to search for food on his own. He strived to be at least somewhat independent, but he knew his protector was always there beside him. He could feel a difference in the currents when it was.

As he grew older, his trips into the depths went farther and farther, always heading downward, and never toward the surface. He could hear the faint moans of Tidelord’s prophecies from the bottom of the trench, and he was drawn toward them by his curiosity. Those sounds were stored in the back of his mind, as the deep, menacing tone felt like it held some importance to him.

His curiosity grew with his age, and as an adult, he craved answers to all his questions. What did he look like? What did his protector look like? Was the entire world this dark and cold? What are the sounds coming from below? As if it could feel his festering restlessness one day, his protector gently lifted his claw with its smooth appendage, placing it against what he assumed to be its body. It moved out of the cavern, and he quickly followed, keeping his claw against it so he would not lose it in the darkness.

It felt like he was swimming for ages when a faint green light pierced through the waters. He swam faster towards it, drawn to it like a moth to a flame. As it came closer into view, the light split into thousands, covering some enormous surface. He knew that whatever he was looking at was massive, as it seemed to have no end and no beginning. The surface of it expanded so far into the distance that even its own glow couldn’t illuminate it completely. Eventually, he was close enough to the lights that he could finally, after so, so long, look over and see his companion for the first time. It was not at all what he expected. Instead of seeing some living creature, he saw a long, twisting appendage the extended down into the darkness and back up into the unknown surface ahead. This enormous thing that seemed to be an entire world of its own was his protector, and what he had been interacting with was only a small part of it.

A painfully loud click emanated from his protector, echoing off the walls of the trench and spreading throughout the sea. He hesitantly approached it, his head beginning to ache as he struggled to grasp what he was looking at. The green lights covering its surface appeared to be pustules filled with some sort of bioluminescent gas, illuminating its rocky skin. Scattered tubes expanded and contracted, inhaling and exhaling water. Numerous orbs with small black dots were set into its body, all flickering back and forth, except for the ones closest to him, that seemed to stare in his direction.

The pain in his head turned to agony as confusion and fear began to set in. He panicked and turned away from his protector, swimming away as fast as he could. His wings, arms, and legs worked together like a well-oiled machine, rapidly propelling him through the water and toward the surface. The pain moved from his head and into his eyes as the light began to sting. He burst out of the sea, and with a few strokes of his wings, landed on dry land, where he coughed and gasped for air. He kept his eyes shut tight, even when he finally caught his breath, as the light was more intense than anything he had ever seen before. After a brief rest, he picked himself up off the ground and navigated himself away from the sea with echolocation.

He stopped when his claw splashed into a shallow puddle. Against his better judgement, he slowly opened his eyes, enduring the pain as they adjusted to the light. He looked down into the puddle and saw his reflection for the first time. It was not as terrifying as what he had just witnessed, but it still startled him. He had only seen what bioluminescent fish happened to swim by while in the Leviathan Trench, so despite being one, he had never seen a dragon before. Not knowing what to do now that he was in a bright, unknown world, he wandered, often keeping his eyes closed as he prefered the comfort of darkness.

Over the years, he slowly adjusted to life on land, occasionally coming across clans of dragons like him, where he would temporarily settle down to learn their ways. The draconic language came slowly to him, but as he learned, he began to remember the sounds he had heard deep in the trench. They were years worth of tales of the future stored in the back of his mind, just waiting to be translated and understood.. As a bargaining chip to find a permanent home, he approached the leader of a clan and offered his services as a prophet. While it’s not surprising that his predictions are doubted by most, he has not been wrong once.
