When both of Aerv's parents committed to the service of the gladekeeper, they left him behind as a hatchling to face the dangers of the world alone. When he was a week old, he was rescued by an assassin clan called order of the black crow run by a dragon called the Viatrix. When she took him under her wing for training, she taught him everything he needed to know about the art of being an assassin.

After several years of training, she deemed him ready and sent him off into the world. Only to find after a couple years he ended up in the same place she did as an outcast assassin in a carnival of misfits and oddities run by a rather passive guardian named Needle. After they found each other again, they decided to start a new assassin clan called the Bloody Rose which involved various dragons to build a network of spies and assassins all from within the carnival.

Excerpt from the Journal of Mistress Needle: Not only do I not trust the intentions of Viatrix or Aerv within my company, it is only my forgiving and accepting nature that allows them to be here at all. When I took Aerv in, I did not expect him to be a coliseum dragon or find thrill in the hunt and kill. Now I watch Viatrix and Aerv very closely for I do not wish nefarious dealings going on within my carnival or within my family.
