Jeanne found Frettchen in the remains of an old abandoned laboratory. It was in such disrepair that she was unable to tell whether it had been the site of Lightning, Arcane, or some other flight's experiments. However, despite seeming to have been abandoned for years, she found something living there, something that hissed when she got too close and stared at her with gleaming red eyes. The mirror was pale from who knows how long locked away from the sun, and skinny from malnutrition. Jeanne managed to gently coax him out of his hiding place with food and soft words, and, pitying the poor thing, took him back home to the lair with her.

It was clear that Frettchen had been experimented on back when the laboratory was in use. He had old scars, and some that still bled, although Jeanne was unable to tell whether it was because they hadn't healed, or because he kept tearing them open. She tried to take him to the clan's healer, and encountered a rather large obstacle. Frettchen seemed to have imprinted on her and only her, hissing and snarling at anyone who tried to come close, no matter how careful they were. He followed her wherever she went, much to her chagrin, like a puppy. He even got aggressive whenever any other dragon did something he deemed threatening to her, whether it was raising their voice, or moving too close to her. When she tried to break that habit, by locking herself in a room out of his sight for a while, or leaving without him, the results were pitiful. He sat by the locked door scratching at it and whining, or anxiously clawed and bit at his own wounds until they opened up and began bleeding, until she returned.

Frettchen is as lithe and agile as his namesake, able to squeeze though small spaces and dodge around obstacles with remarkable agility. He doesn't use his wings to fly, hunting and fighting only on the ground, although he's been seen to use them to help keep his balance when he's racing along some narrow ledge or making a hairpin turn. All he'll eat is raw meat, crunching down the bones along with it. No one in the clan has ever heard him speak, and it's possible that he can't. It's uncertain as to whether he's always been like this, or it's an effect of the experiments performed on him. Certainly he's unusually tireless whether he's hunting or fighting. That and his dogged loyalty to Jeanne, the only one he'll take orders from, seem like traits that unscrupulous scientists might have been trying to imbue into him. But perhaps he was just always like that. Frettchen has certain never said anything about it.

It's easy to dismiss Frettchen as just Jeanne's pet, always following her and growling at anyone who comes close, but it should be remembered that he's a ferocious fighter. Fighting is one of the few things he clearly enjoys, the bloodier and more vicious the better. He's attacked dragons who didn't back off when he growled, or worse yet tried to hurt Jeanne, showing no mercy to anyone who makes her bleed. Even Jeanne sometimes has trouble calling him off before he's torn his opponent to pieces. Many members of the clan find him unsettling, and even Decarabia, known for her own vicious tendencies in battle, is vocally disapproving of him (although this doesn't stop her from getting into a fight with him whenever they meet, to their mutual glee.)
