Biography
Shaka
When the Walls Fell
"Shaka..." They whisper her name, tell of her coming, bow at the edges of the pathways as she passes. "Priestess," they say. "Your grace." Their faces are not like hers but they are her people, every one of them.
Two follow like monochromatic ghosts - one black, one white and both ready to serve. She need only raise a claw. Need only ask. The whole world, it seems, waits on her every move; on her every desire.
Their home is perched high on the edges of the mountain where the crimson-painted structure can be best seen against the black volcanic rock; where it perches like a hunter over the villages spread out below. Lush green gardens have grown in the courtyards and patios and throughout it is filled with livid blooms of every color. Speckled birds dart between the greenery and fill the flowery sweet air with their song. It is, she knows, an enchanting place to have grown up. And one day it will be hers. She will take a mate from the village and there will be others like them, others kissed by fire.
But in the meantime, there are duties to see to. There are disputes to moderate and events to host and the ever encroaching press of the world beyond their tiny island. A world, she admits to no one, that fascinates her. What treasures lie beyond their watery walls? What peoples might she see? What food might she have? The possibilities entice her.
But now? Here? Now there are duties. There are torches to light - a tired old ritual performed by the youngest the hatchlings. By herself.
From their loft, Shaka can watch the sunset unobstructed save the gossamer drapes left to gust in the breeze between finely carved wooden posts. Half the dome of heaven burns red and orange as the globe of the sun slinks away unashamed. Farther overhead there are pinks, purples and the ubiquitous blues of a night just beginning. The evening star shines like a single unblinking eye.
"... Shaka," Jalad says again. She crouches beside her daughter, spreads a feathered wing across the others scaled shoulders to bring her gentle from her thoughts. "The torches, love. It's dusk."
She lifts her head, focuses her eyes and then her mind on the soft, kind face of her mother and then on the world around her. She has a job to do. That's right.
"Yes," she says. "I'm going."
