First born in the nest, first on his feet, first to leave the lair and now first to flight. He is new to the concept of pride, but already Tanagra is getting the idea. At the crest of the hill, the whole world rolls out beneath him: from the stony low hills of dark volcanic rock to the midlands swathed in jungle greens to the sandy, blacksand beaches far far away. The wind is high, the sun warm and overhead seabirds wheel and dart as if to encourage him. He is electric with excitement. His tail snakes in the grass, he steps forward. Far, far away he can hear his sister's shrill voice warning him. Warning him of what? Of greatness is what.

Tanagra looks back over his shoulder at the bright and moon-eyed faces of his siblings trapped by chickeny-ness at the edge of their lair. Shaka shakes her head silently.

"Babies." He turns back to the open sky, shimmies into a squat and leaps.

His wings snap out and catch an updraft of salty-sweet ocean air. It is, he notices at once, very much like the flapping and gliding and skirting about they had been doing around the lair. Very much so like it. And very much so not. Quickly, his round little body loses loft, his wings tremble. His heart drops before he does and when the earth comes up to greet him it's with a stiff crunch and the scale-scraping slide of his body down the rocky hillside.

It is one of countless failures; of innumerable missteps and mistakes and misguided ventures all borne from ego, stubbornness and impatience. Coupled with a sharp wit and a loud mouth, Tanagra is fun to be around, but perhaps only in short bouts.
