Rainy Days
Morninglight stared unseeingly out the stone entrance of her den. She shifted her weight silently from one foot to another. The soft pitter-patter of the rain was the only sound to be heard. The guradian let out a weary sigh. Memories rose unwelcome of another rainy day many moons ago.
A grey speckled ridgeback stared apologetically back at her. "I'm sorry, Morninglight. I can't do this anymore." His voice was husky with emotion, but his purple gaze never wavered.
"Just go." Her reply was barely above a whisper, as she struggled to keep her feelings at bay. If she let them out now, it felt as though she might drown in them.
For a moment it looked as if he wanted to say more, but then it passed. Without a word Silvergadget turned and stepped out into the rain. She watched the water dance and bounce off his scales with no reaction from him. That bothered her more than anything, for she knew how much he hated to get wet. Yet there he was, leaving her, in the middle of this shower. Finally the misty terrain swallowed his silhouette, and she felt the tears roll unbidden down her cheeks.
With another sigh, Morninglight tried to dispel the remembered sadness. She did not enjoy rainy days.
A solid impact from the rear startled the guardian out of her reminiscing and knocked her right off her feet. The momentum sent her skidding outside before she could bring herself to a stop. Sputtering, she stood back up as the downpour completely soaked her. Wiping the water from her eyes, she turned back to see a cerulean snapper standing proudly back at the entrance.
"What's the matter, Honey? You look a little stunned." Ichorous's satin smooth voice called to her over the sound of the precipitation. "Have my dazzling good looks finally left you speechless? Still, that is no reason to be standing out in the rain."
Morninglight straightened herself and slowly sauntered back towards him. "Why yes Ichorous, it would seem I was finally completely taken by your charms," her voice pitched low and sultry. His beaming smile warmed her from snout to tail-tip, and she felt the corners of her mouth rise in response. A tiny shiver of pleasure ran up her spine as he unconsciously leaned in to her approach. "I find I can't keep my claws off of you!"
With a lunge she locked on to his front leg and yanked him out from under the shelter of the stone. The strength of her pull sent them barrel-rolling over each other across the cold, wet ground. They came to a halt with simultaneous groans, Ichorous pinned under Morninglight.
She started to giggle at the absurdity of the situation, with them now laying there in the rain. Her laugh grew until it shook her whole body, and soothed her soul. As she wiped a tear from her eye, she glanced down at Ichorous. His enraptured gaze was locked on her, and she found she couldn't look away. Gently she brushed her muzzle against his jaw, then she pried herself off of him.
"Thank you Ichorous, you don't know how much I needed this," she spoke ruefully. The snapper just leaned into her tenderly. No words were needed, and again the only sound was the soft pitter-patter of the rain.
It is time to embrace some new rainy day memories, Morninglight thought to herself and smiled.
