This is not the Laputuem you were expecting. Laputuem was brighter than the sun, tinted with more purple than a cloudy dawn. He was Borael's first friend, best friend, hunting partner and partner in crime. This dragon was dressed differently, in a fashion that spoke of foreign adventures and that won over the familiar twinkle in his eye. Borael stared down at the brown and blue dragon. "You are not him," she said flatly, and left. Naeroetia watched her adopted child leave her second in cold anger and inclined her head to Azaelrie, who gently cleared his throat and nudged the stunned dragon away. The next few months were filled with Lapu's attempts to win Borael's good favour. It began with, "Do you remember when we would see who could somersault over Cass's back the fastest?" and ended with, "When we got lost... I changed. Isn't that what happened to you?" Borael dragged a talon down the ashen currents on her wings. "Yes," she begrudged. "But I didn't come back THAT different." Lapu said, "Are you kidding? You lost the purple too! Don't even with me, you Pinkerton picker-" "I'm not the one who left for a few years and forgot how to hunt so I could stand around and be uselessly pretty-" "You think I'm pretty?!" "Naeroetia always said you were better off in beauty pagents," Bora pushed down on Lapu's head, but didn't manage to cover the pleased expression on both of their faces. "Ah, they're back to flirting and fighting." Azaelrie sighed wistfully. "It's like nothing changed." "I don't know," Nae grumbled, "It was pretty nice while it was quiet." "Puh-LEEZE, like you're not the happiest dragon here now that little Lapu's back home." Cassandane nudged Nae knowingly, until a grin broke out over the clan leader's face. --- "There's so many new dragons," Lapu remarked. He watched the communal meal dissolve into chaos as Birdfriend tried to fight someone who had snuck a bird in to eat, and Lokaeto attempted to restrain her charge. "Yep. With all these new mouths to feed, it almost makes a hunter wish they had help." Lapu shied away under her pointed gaze. "I know, I know! But look, I learned a lot of cool stuff while I was away! I'll show you later." "It'd better be worth it," Bora grumbled. She shoved a clam into Lapu's mouth and as he choked he garbled something that may have been, "You are DEFINITELY Nae's kid." --- As it turns out, what he learned was pretty cool. At night the dangling planets and gleaming bracelets came off and he showed Bora how he had learned to hunt without the moon, and during the wee hours of the morning he took Bora to the top of the tree where they charted the stars.
