There are many paths to fairyland—doorways, fairy rings, long journeys across the misty countryside; some lie below hills and a few go deeper, far underground. Spinel guards one of these, a gaping crevice that shrinks to a narrow tunnel which worms deep below the ground before it opens into a cavern, jewel-encrusted and lit by an eerie bioluminescence. |
A path to fairyland is an unusual charge. It's not Spinel's duty to keep travelers away—if that needs be done, the narrow passageways of the cavern do it well enough. Those who will come and go from Fairyland must, driven by a need greater than themselves, and no guardian can stand in their way. Fissure made this journey twice; the claustrophobic tunnels compressed her hard as stone.
Both the children had the greatest difficulty in entering the tunnel. For the first yard or so it sloped downwards, and then turned uphill, not sharply, but enough to cause acute discomfort at the bend. Sand choked the entrance, though even when that was behind them the tunnel was so heavily silted that it was almost beyond the children to move at all. They lay full length, walls, floor, and roof fitting them like a second skin. Their heads were turned to one side, for in any other position the roof pressed their mouths into the sand and they could not breathe. The only way to advance was to pull with their fingertips and to push with their toes, since it was impossible to flex their legs and all, and any bending of the elbows threatened to jam the arms helplessly under the body.
Instead, Spinel's duty is to watch. Find her curled around the brilliant gems that shine within the crystal cave. Find her in the very walls, her flesh the rocky protrusions that travelers must inch around. She is impartial but vigilant, the only witness to a long, dark, difficult subterranean journey from this realm to another.
They all emerged on the other side before their lungs were drained of air. They cried or laughed, each according to his nature, and the sound in all cases was the same.
