Biography

Vaihdokas is a child who is believed to have been switched with a human child by some evil creature. Sometimes it is believed only the soul of the child is switched.
Vaihdokas is dim-witted and odd looking. In Finnish folklore the child is switched by an elf or nature spirit. Scandinavians believed a troll could switch a child. The switch happens before the child is baptised or before the child's first tooth breakout.

The mother can avoid her child switching by guarding he/she enough. This means the switch is the mothers fault.

There is some information about the switched children's fate. At least in Scandinavia people have killed children who have been believed to been switched. In Finland this has happened for example in Kalajoki and Åland Islands.

In some stories Vaihdokas has been succesfully restored. The child has been rubbed with magical lotion or the child has been left in a forest for some time so the elf missing their own has switched the child back. Scandinavians might have put their child in a hot oven, so that he/she would be healed. At least in one case a woman has been in court for killing her own child in an oven.
