Biography

She was the second to emerge, mere seconds after her sister, pecking through the hard shell with the stubborn resilience of any hatchling. Her head poked through, a tawny gold like ther sister and parents, and she drew a deep breath, letting out a shrill wail. Another happy, healthy hatchling.

Her mother huddled close, rubbing against her scales with low comforting hums. She opened her eyes, her cries gurgling happily as she returned the nuzzle, and met her parents stare. Instinctively, the baby smiled and laughed.

But her mother was shocked. Jumping back quickly, like she had been struck, her mother could only stare deep into the eyes of the young hatchling. Her expression morphed from love and affection to revulsion.

"Look at her," she whispered to her mate, drawing the other hatchling closer to herself a gentle sweep of her tail. They looked at her, golden-eyed and golden-scaled, with identical stares of fear.

Red. Her eyes were a red as deep and dark as blood.

---

She less than half grown when they threw her out. When they deemed her old enough to hunt and walk, they drove her out with lashes of their claws and the bite of their teeth. She remembered it all. She remembered everything. From the looks they had given her the moment she was born to the unconcealed whispers not quite beind her back to now, she could not forget. They were the nightmares of her daytime, the sun to the moons of the dreams she had at night which too were full of their teeth and their terror, but at least there, she stood a chance of defeating them.

She left, and when she did, she named herself, unnamed as she was during her stay with her so-called family. Rue, she declared, for they would rue the day they set their terrible eyes on her.

She knew she wasn't supposed to live. No half grown dragon, thrust out into the wilderness alone -- and desert like the land was now -- should have lived, but she scavenged somehow. She stayed by clans, sneaking meat sometimes during the night, only driven off when they caught on. Her belly was hungry more often than not, a dull pain she became used to. Soon enough, her bones began to show, the lines of her ribs marked out like the branches of a tree. Rue probably would have died -- should have died-- if not for one night, a tundra, grizzled and grey, startled her.

"I have heard of you," he started, and Rue whirled around, all teeth and claws and tail, an angry snarl embedded on her lips.

The grey-haired tundra was silent, tilting his head to the side as he watched her carefully. "The cursed one. Rumors of you have spread far and wide."

"Why do you care?" demanded Rue. She didn't relax, tense and crouched, and gave a low laugh. "You're here to kill me now, aren't you? Like the rest of them. All they want is the glory of presenting the cursed one's head back to my parents, but that won't end the drought. I know. When you are hated, you learn to listen, and the drought as been around far longer than I have breathed."

The tundra quirked a smile. "Oh, dear Rue, I am not here to kill you."

"How do you know my name?" She had told no one, talked to no one, and yet, this dragon knew her name. "What are you?"

"Rather, little one, I am here to help you," he continued, as if Rue had not interrupted. He did not even flinch at her growing snarl and anger. His smile only widened. "My dreams are littered with you, and I knew that when you came close, I would have to come with you. You are destined for greatness. A leader of a new clan."

"Your sweet lies won't make me bite," Rue said, wary, but it was clear by the fact that she was still here, by the yearning in her voice, that she wished it was true. Hope ballooned in her, for the first time in months.

"If you don't believe me, then believe this." The tundra stood, backing off slowly, revealing a bone that he had been hiding under his great expanse of fur. He rolled it towards her, and Rue inspected it. It was covered in carvings, strange glyphs that spoke into her mind. "You're a shaman," Rue stated.

The tundra gestured with his forearm. "Then you should know what to do."

She stuck her arm out on her, her claws fitting on top like a glove, and she pressed down, listening to the crack with satisfaction and a rumble of her stomach. The air around her seemed to dissolve, and she gasped as she saw herself, surrounded by piles of bones, full and strong and lithe, dragons by her side, talking and chewing on bones, and laughing. And she was laughing too.

The sting in her eyes was too much, and she closed them, feeling tears trickling down the sides of her face. "No," she said, voice shuddering, stomping down upon the hope like she had the bone. "No, it's not true. Just an illusion, a dream you wanted me to see. Trying to lure me into a sense of safety. I know your tricks."

"Read the words on the bone," said the shaman, voice a gentle caress on her skin.

She took a deep breath, looking down to read the words. Somehow, she knew what they said.

Rue.

Her name. A divination. She looked up. Even the tundra didn't know what she had seen. A vision, for herself alone, a powerful spell that was only used on influential people -- matriarchs and patriarchs and their children -- and he had wasted one on her. "Why are you bothering with me?"

"I was exiled from my clan," came the reply, "just like you. Some dragons believed I got too powerful and got jealous. My dreams and my bones lead me to you, little one."

Frank and blunt, and Rue knew he was telling the truth. She smelled no lies, felt nothing in her gut, and her hope. It had grown too large, weeded her mind, and now it couldn't be removed. Fugue stared right at her, his eyes never leaving hers. "Let me help you, little one. Together, we will show them that their ways are backwards. We shall usher in a new time, one where we will stand on top."

She liked the sound of that. She liked the idea of her parents cowering at her feet, at the sounds of her sister being driven away. The idea of power was intoxicating. She would be in control, no longer having to hide and sneak around and steal. She would be the one who guarded the food, who stood tall and proud, and scared away all those who didn't dserve it.

Rue gave the tundra a bloodthirsty smile. "Don't think I trust you yet," she warned him, "but life couldn't get worse than this. Let's try this little plan of yours."
