소풍날 내리는 비. 중요한 데이트가 있는 아침 쏟아지는 우박. 누군가 날씨가 맑길 바라면 그 그림자 속에 장난꾼 구름이 숨어서 듣고 있다는 말은 메인랜드 전역에 퍽 오랫동안 구전되어 오는 우스갯소리였다. 물론 메인랜드의 모든 격언이나 속담이 그렇듯 그 말 또한 어느 정도 근거가 있는 말이었다. 막 번개가 치기 직전의 잔뜩 성난 구름에서 태어난 이 장난꾸러기 정령은 늘 구름 뒤에 숨어 사람들을 엿보고 그들의 대화를 엿듣길 즐겼다. 그러다가 누군가 내일 날씨가 맑았으면 좋겠다고 중얼거리면 이내 심술궃은 표정으로 비나 눈, 혹은 우박을 뿌려버리고 마는 것이다.

구름의 장난은 늘 이런 식이라 사람들은 그를 별로 반기지 않았지만 시골의 농부들은 달랐다. 그들은 봄의 가뭄이면 늘 비를 바랐고 이 장난꾼 구름도 그럴 때만은 기꺼이 농부들이 원하는 만큼의 비를 뿌려주고 흡족한 마음으로 어깨를 으쓱거리며 떠나는 것이다. 이 장난꾸러기에게도 소박한 소원이 있는데, 그것은 바로 단 한 번이라도 모든 사람들이 맑은 날보다 비 오는 날이 더 많았으면 하고 바라는 것이다.


두근거리며 간신히 잠이 들었던 어젯 밤의 맑은 하늘이 무색하게도 하늘은 잿빛으로 변해 비가 내리고 있었다.
울상인 채로 어깨를 축 늘어뜨리고 터덜터덜 걷는 아이 곁으로 옅은 바람이 소리내 웃으며 지나갔다.
