Jahn

The Ridgeback hatched in the mighty Shadow lair of Lord Nergal, raised alongside his half-brother Basalt. Jahn has always followed his older brother's lead, even when that lead him straight into a life of crime, beginning with simple thefts and building up to larger and darker deeds. Of course, it wasn't solely his half-brother's influence that lead Jahn to tread a crooked path in life; his mother Millidia was an assassin of infamous repute. Eventually, the two brothers got a bit too bold and it cost them badly, and Basalt chose to leave the Tangled Wood entirely to shed his sullied public reputation. Jahn, as ever, loyally followed him to Dragonhome.

Jahn is Basalt's assistant, in both his brother's mercantile facade and their true careers in the Hydra Scorpion gang. In the old days, when they were street-level criminals, they'd set their schemes in motion with Jahn swiping some things that weren't his, and letting himself get caught. With Jahn at the center of the ensuing fracas, and all eyes of law enforcement squarely on him, his brother Basalt would be able to make his move and achieve their real goal. In this way Basalt kept up his veneer of simple, honest merchanthood and humbly pleaded for leniency for his slow younger brother, claiming that he didn't know better, and it was Jahn's nature as a Ridgeback to “borrow” things anyway. After making a scene the brothers departed, sure in the knowledge that their real, much subtler crimes wouldn't be noticed for days or attached to them when they were.

As Basalt's goals became loftier and his hand in things less direct, Jahn too moved up a little bit in the Earthen underworld. He maintains a carefully crafted reputation of dim-wittedness, using it to attract and divert attention to suit his needs. Jahn lets some of his true cunning show when openly working with Basalt to make deals with other key players in crime, but when he's apart from Basalt it lets him operate in the shadows far below suspicion. No one who's been shown his guise of Jahn "Jahnny Boy" the foolhardy, guileless, mannerless kleptomaniac would guess the existence of the cruel mobster beneath the mask, "the Goblin Shark" who spends his days swindling and mugging, running protection rackets in areas afflicted with disorganized crime, or going straight to Basalt's enemies and politely commanding them to back off, or pay tribute to the Scorpions- or else.
