ABOUT. As head librarian of the library in the Clan of Rattling Bone, Hesperus makes it his business to understand what the clan members might have an interest in studying, because if there is one thing he hates, it is an unused, dusty library. As such, the library is filled with a great many tomes on practical matters: diplomacy, botany, matters of trade, cooking, engineering, even history and a few books on the subject of war. Hesperus hasn't forgotten the fiction: otherworldly tales, flights of fancy, romances tragic to cheesy, and much more. Most of these books have been checked out several times, and it's clear from the worn covers and wrinkled pages that they're well-loved. Hesperus thinks he's done an excellent job. For all his knowledge, however, there is still one problem: he can't read dragons. Body language is as much a mystery to him as the Shade is to most Sorineth scholars. He's awkward, lumbering, and can't hold a conversation to save his life. Most of the clan members try to be as understanding as possible but he is not unused to strange stares, so he avoids interaction as much as he can and prefers the quiet solitude of his library over the hustle and bustle of the clan. Perhaps the most baffling dragon of all was Celaeno, the clan's resident bard. She's unpredictable, wildly so, and even now he still can't figure out the rhythm she moves to. What confused him most of all was that Celaeno seemed to enjoy spending time with him. After an encounter that made him also realise his feelings for her, the two became a casual, tentative couple. Celaeno makes sure that his anxiety doesn't overwhelm him, often guiding him away from conversations that make him uncomfortable. While he files tomes and replaces scrolls, she likes flitting between bookshelves, coming up with new songs. They throw lines of poetry, folktales, and songs back and forth, Celaeno's cheerful voice echoing in the chamber and Hesperus's measured replies calling back. His is a quiet existence, a happy one. It's a shame it won't last. IMPRESSIONS. When Hesperus isn't in the library, he's likely checking out potential nooks around the lair, talking to the other members, sourcing for wood for the bookshelves as the library expands, and working on his novel. He's a little clumsy and bumbling, uncertain of where to put his claws when he talks. Ask him about his library, though, and his eyes will light up and any trace of the hesitant awkwardness vanishes. PAST. Raised in a nomad clan, and fell in love with books from a young age. Always dreamed of settling somewhere so he'd have somewhere to put his fast-growing collection. Eventually, he parted ways with his home clan to work in a library in the Forum then moved on to manage an archive in the Shifting Expanse. Through no fault of his own, the archive burned down, and Hesperus decided to return to the nomadic life -- if anything to try and let go of the heartache. Then he found himself stopping over in the Clan of Rattling Bone. Their library was small, still growing and incredibly disorganised. Hesperus itched to fix it, and approached the clan leaders to see about a job. CONNECTIONS. Celaeno: Mate and resident bard. Hesperus loves watching her perform and enjoys her company enormously.
