Then

She flittered around the battlefield, checking on the fallen. Some of them were beyond her magic, but others could be helped. A green guardian with brown wings lay on his side. She couldn’t tell from a distance whether his chest heaved with breath or not.

She fluttered next to his nostril, felt the faintest breath stir her wings. Nodding to herself, she began to survey his body, looking for his wounds. One leg was badly bleeding. She hummed to herself as she made a poultice for it with ingredients from her healing pouch. Nobody was really sure whether the songs or the herbs did more of the healing. Serafina was not much inclined toward idle curiosity. She knew in her bones that the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. The medicine and the songs must be applied together. She hummed and sang, and began wrapping the leg. The guardian stirred.

“Stay still,” she sang, and changed her tune to a sleepy one as she continued dressing the wound. The guardian’s eyes fell closed again. She continued her exploration of him, looking for more wounds. She splinted a break in his tail and changed her song again, to one that would waken the great dragon.

When his eyes fluttered open, she was near his head. “I need to check your other side for wounds,” she said. “Can you stand?”

The avocado colored flank shuddered as the dragon wobbled to his feet, favoring the wrapped leg. He grunted as he stood. Serafina made her way down the other side of his body, looking for more injury. She found the broken tip of an arrow imbedded in his side just below his breastplate. She considered it carefully, wondering if pulling it would cause more harm.

“You’ll need to go to the surgeons’ tent,” she said. “Lean on me, I’ll help you walk.”

He looked at the tiny fae and laughed, a wheezy, injured laugh. But Serafina flew up against him, holding him steady and singing her strongest songs. Step by step, they made their way to the tent. The surgeons took him and she turned back to the battlefield to look for more survivors.

“Wait,” the guardian said. “I don’t even know your name.”

“Serafina,” she told him.

“Hello, Serafina. I’m Bankalt. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.” By the time he finished gasping out the introduction, she was already gone. He wasn’t sure whether she’d heard his name, and if she had, he didn’t think she cared.

Now

“Step lively! The key to battlefield medicine is speed!” she said. The young medics in training trailed after her, with the lumbering snapper bringing up the rear.

Serafina sighed sharply and tried to hold her temper. If it were entirely up to her, she’d only train faes as medics. Their small size gave them a natural advantage in avoiding arrows and debris. But Bankalt felt that a more diverse cadre would be to their clan’s advantage.

Bankalt. The guardian whose fate was entwined with her own. They hadn’t known as much back then about how the songs worked. It had been thought that the songs pulled magic from the air, but they did not. They pulled threads of magic from the dragon being healed, weaving them in with the medic’s own magic to enhance the herbs. Serafina had sung magic out of Bankalt as she performed first aid. And when she’d helped him to the surgeons’ tent, she’d sung her own magic back into him. And something about their two magics mixed perfectly. That was why she’d followed him when he left the fighting and retired to form his own clan after that battle. That was why in the early days of their clan, as they built their lair and chased off Beastclan invaders, she sang to him often, mixing and remixing their magic. That was why even now, when he was out patrolling the edges of their territory, she’d go along with him. They chatted and discussed happenings in the clan, and she sang and mixed their magics, and their respective mates understood this fully.

“Miss Serafina?” One of the young dragons interrupted her train of thought and she realized she’d stopped.

“Listen carefully!” she said. “What do you hear?”

The dragons frowned and listened to their surroundings, but heard nothing out of the ordinary. Serafina took a moment to gather herself before they moved on. They were gathering herbs today from a plant that grew only in the early spring. As Serafina watched the young dragons search through the meadow, she sighed again. “You are stepping on it! You are crushing the plant!” she yelled, cringing as the snapper trampled through the meadow. This class had far to go before any of them would be ready for a true test. She only hoped the peace would last long enough for her to finish their training.

Biggest Regret

"There was a dragon who was like a daughter to me, but I was too overbearing. She felt smothered and left. I miss her every day."

"Spring, always. The newly born wildlife, the leaves budding on the trees, the breezes that whisper through all of it."

"I tried to get into axe throwing once, on a bet. I could barely heft the axe! My favorite hobbies are drinking and carousing. I'm pretty good at darts, lousy at pool."

Happenstance - friend

Two dragons loving the same person in different ways can be hard. That's why there's so much tension between dragons and their mothers-in-law. But Happy and Serafina both want the same things for Bankalt, namely happiness and peace, so they try to address any jealousy head-on so it doesn't fester.
