Rowntree never felt like he fit in his home clan. He was born with "ugly" plumage, and to top it off, his parents gave him an awkward name. Although no one in the clan ever said anything, and they were all very nice to him, he was convinced they were laughing behind his back. Finally he decided to leave. He'd do something great, and earn their respect!
His first stop was in Soother's kingdom, and Rowntree was immediately taken under the wing of the young brothers Meri and Araxie. Still not completely believing in his own image, his two new friends set about equipping Rowntree with a new sense of self-worth. After a short incident that involved Meri, Rowntree and Sansa, the Bone Queen, it was decided that Rowntree would probably be best if he moved on. However, despite their mother's annoyance the Bone Princes Meri and Araxie threw a small farewell party for their friend, with pleas for Rowntree to return when he could for a visit.
His second stop brought him to the plagued land of Rotrick Grimm. He stumbled upon another tundra, Dantor, who was very much like him- "ugly". Dantor quickly took Rowntree under his wing. "There is no beauty in self pity. It is kindness that brings beauty," he had informed Rown.
Little by little, Rown started to believe Dantor. Although as welcoming as Dantor was, Rowntree still didn't feel like he fit in. Under the cover of night he slipped out and made his way towards another Clan.
On his next stop, he stumbled upon a light clan full of spirals. Most of them were kind and nice too him, but that did not really help him. He was all alone, and felt alone. But a young spiral, Nakita, once told him "Everyone is unique, and you suits yourself very well!" Rowntree didn't understand it in the beginning. She was young, and couldn't know anything about 'not fitting in.' But at the time he was wondering if he should wander to a new lair, he began to understand what she meant.
As were flying away from the lair, he met a lovely spiral. She told him that she were looking for a place to spend the night. Rowntree didn't want to mention he was flying away, and took her back to the light lair. They used all nights to talk, and he became really fond of her.
Aquamarine and Rowntree both travelled to the crystalspine reaches in the Arcane region to find a secret lair. Within the lair, they both saw many dragons, some were visitors, but the clan members looked to be like they were going to be off on an adventure too. Together, Rowntree and Aquamarine both went off and made friends with the clan members. A few days later, a feast filled with delicious foods was held in honour of all the visitors and they both thought it was time to go. The clan made sure that they were both welcome back at anytime!
When Rontree and Aquamarine arrived to the sunken treasure clan they were soon swept up in the lax ebb and flow of the warm water clan. For Rowntree, this meant a lot of time spent sunbathing on the warm beaches together with other tundras in the clan, watching Aquamarine and the other spirals sweep through the air to catch bugs and birds (occasionally falling through the air when their energy ran out - luckily tundras are soft to land on).
While his colours and genes still stood out remarkably in the clan, it somehow seemed to matter less and less the longer they stayed.
That his birthclan was so near now, after all his journeys to far-away lands, slipped his mind around the same time as he forgot to keep track of the calendar (an event that had prompted a "One of us! One of us!"-chant from the permanent residents). As such it came as a complete surprise for everyone when he received a missive from his family, asking him to return home. The note didn't reveal what kind of reception he would receive, but as Aquamarine put it: "If they didn't actually want you back then they would be requesting you."
While the clan scribe made early notes of his achievements and miscelaneous graces in the annuals, Rowntree took a quiet farewell from Aquamarine, who still had some places left to visit in the world. Then he descended to the depths of the Thousand Currents, to the family he hadn't seen in so long, thoughts buzzing with memories of the friends he had met. Or at least memories of smells of friends he had met. He realized there were many smells like that.
