Katla was born in the Viridian Labyrinth into a world of lush greenery. She never felt comfortable though and felt as though she was being smothered by foliage.

Her eureka moment came during a violent storm. She witnessed lightning strike a tree and set it aflame. She saw then that nature could actually be powerful and awe-inspiring and so she gathered her belongings and took flight to the Shifting Expanse.

After meeting her mate Erebus, a Coatl from the Fire flight, she re-found her species' passion for searing heat and steaming lava. Although she is content in the Shifting Expanse she chooses to make pilgrimages to the Ashfall Waste. She has particular fondness for volcanoes and will sometimes even sacrifice small animals to honour them. Her mate Erebus finds this a little odd, although he understands that this hobby is important to her. He also rather enjoys the resulting barbecue if there's seafood involved.
