❀ Species Profile & Conservation Status ❀

Least Concern Jayakar's Seahorse is a species of coastal fish found in the Western Indian Ocean, from the Red and Arabian seas to the central coast of Pakistan. It lives in seagrass beds, algae, soft-bottom substrates, sponges, and rocky habitats, where it can grow to lengths of 5.5 in. It can inhabit depths to 20 metres (66 ft), though it is more commonly found at 6.6–9.8 ft. It is expected to feed on small crustaceans, similar to other seahorses. The species may be threatened by seagrass habitat degradation and loss, but the seagrasses in its region have been assessed as Least Concern, and this species is able to utilize other habitat types. Population and trade monitoring are needed to ensure this species does not become threatened.

Fun Fact: This species is ovoviviparous, with males carrying eggs in a brood pouch before giving birth to live young.

Born to two parents who live in Owl Wood, but hatched in a Shadow lair, Jayakar is our Ambassador to the Shadow Flight. In his spare time, he loves to experiment with conjuration, especially making things glow in the dark.
