Originally, the only Male Level 25 fighter in the lair, Rigal was first asked to help train the up and coming males at the higher levels. But he proved so cantankerous and scared off so many recruits that he was relieved of those duties. Indeed, he only truly accepts other Level 25 dragons as his equals. Although he submits to Bree and Dom in deference to their status, inwardly, he feels them inferior to himself.

And then along came Artemis, who was not afraid of him even when she was a hatchling. She noticed that he liked to watch insects, and gave him some very interesting insect-watching tips. Soon, they shared a nest, and the rest is history. Her friendliness offsets his unfriendliness, so more dragons are now comfortable sitting near him, but usually with Artemis in between!
