You set sail alone, there is no crew
No one on the deck who can help you
This is all your own battle to win
This is your ship

Aisha thought her troubles with ships were over when she'd opted for a life as far from the water as possible ━ traveling all across Sornieth on the Freebird as part of Captain Andromena's ragtag crew. Oh, how wrong she'd been. The howling of the wind, the way the deck swayed lightly; perhaps sea and sky weren't so different after all. And that did not bode well for Aisha's sanity at all.

The Albemarle had been caught in a storm like her crew had never seen before over the expanse of ocean between Ice, Wind and Arcane. The ship had been reduced to splinters. Despite Aisha's birthplace in the Hoverview Vale she was still a fathom created by the Tidelord, a capable swimmer through muscle memory if anything. She was the only survivor.

The few weeks she'd spent on the ground post-storm were hell. Aisha knew she'd never be able to sail again, not after that night, but she couldn't stay in this port town forever. When an airship stopped to refuel, Aisha saw her chance. The dragoness had never liked the feeling of the ground beneath her feet. She needed to be on the move, and everyone had joked that the fathom had a compass where her heart should be: pointing Aisha wherever seemed most interesting at the moment. Miles in the sky was about as far from the ocean as you could get without being landlocked, and being in constant motion on the Freebird would keep her restlessness at bay.

What could not be kept at bay was the nightmares. Every time Aisha slips away into sleep she's taken right back to the crashing waves and skies split by lightning. Her wings refuse to work and she is drowning just like the rest of them. The ship she'd grown to love was gone, and everyone she'd cared about had drunk the sea. The storm had broken her, and sleep aids can only do so much. Her old crewmates' screams and voices never stop ━ only grow quieter from time to time.
Aisha doesn't have any special talents outside of spontaneously flashing back to that horrible storm and so for the Freebird she's just an extra set of hands. Taking on whatever work is needed at the moment to keep herself busy and the voices from coming back. Usually she hangs around the mechanic Aetheria, helping keep the ship in the air and running perfectly ━ crashing over water is one of Aisha's worst fears. If she ever feels the ocean rising above her neck again, the memories will resurface stronger than ever before. Her wings will lock, and the former sailor knows with terrifying certainty that she will die the way her old crew did.

One day the fathom will probably get lost in her brain and never come back out, and she's made peace with it. Aisha may not be able to stop her slide into madness, but she'll delay it for as long as possible.
