Children of an Enchanted Forest

During her first year with Broceliande, as mutual companions and caretakers, the deeply enchanted forest manifested more slivers of self-aware magic in response to their bond, entering the world as both dragon, and spirit of nature.

But on her first hatch-day with the forest, the anniversary if Naomi's infamous ascent, something strange happened. Again, the forest coalesced new beings from Hazel's magic and its own wellspring of verdant energy...but never like this. It hit them both like a blow, Hazel stunned and the forest bowed and shadowed, as Hazel's blood called out to the Veil on this day of power to which she was so inextricably tied, threatening to drain her dry and use her bond to the forest to create more...pliable vessels.

But Hazel was not the only one whose fate was bound to that day of wild magic. Nor was the Veil the only end tapping into such power could achieve. As Hazel began to lose herself in the maelstrom of power trying to fight its way into the world through her blood, she felt a familiar presence, just as attuned to it as she was. After a year spent safeguarding and protecting her beloved forest, now it was Broceliande's turn to protect her, shelter her. Finally she was faced with her greatest fears since childhood...but she was not facing them alone. Your Grandmother's legacy has ever weighed heavy on you, dear one. But if you can face it, can reach beyond it, you will find at long last a power that is yours alone... and you will find me there as well, always.

With her forest's help, and a tremendous effort, Hazel snapped the hold of her Grandmother's curse before its work was complete. Though the three tiny lives she found in a bed of moss in the forest's very center had been deeply marked by the darkness of the Veil's energy, they were not the puppets of destruction that could have been. Abnormally powerful, with an even more dangerous tie to the Veil than her...but in the end, blessedly, masters of their own destiny.

I will be better prepared, next year... Hazel promised Broceliande's avatar, who had bent to nuzzle the curious, shadow-eyed hatchlings. For Hazel knew in a year's time the confluence would happen again, and new spirits of unusual power would be formed... but next time would be different.
