The Change

It all began with the mask. Everything always circulated back to that mask, of course, but that was to be expected. It was special, something different. It was sacrifice and blood and war and battle. It was two lovers' last gift. It symbolized the beginning and ending of the Lair. But it also hid the truth. So in the end, the mask was the mirror and the mirror was the mask. It allowed them to see what they wanted to see. Minds are stubborn in such a way. But in order to understand that, we have to go all the way back. To the beginning.

It was a quite night to remember, and the stars in the sky seemed to hold their breath, waiting to see what would happen. A young egg lay abandoned, an orphan before birth. All due to a war that had been going on for so long, it became meaningless. But something so young and innocent suffered for it, as that was the way the world ran. Only the strong survived. As it was, the egg was a most peculiar egg. Faint traces of blue crackled across its surface, a Lightning egg having wandered far from home. But it was no longer anyone's call. It was all alone.

When the egg trembled, the stars trembled with it. When the hatchling's cry rang out, the trees shook as if mourning. For the cry was not one of pity, the need for comfort. Right from the beginning, Fate could see that this hatchling would change the world. Only time could tell, however. It was the conscious choice, though cruel.
