As always, Stella never failed
to impress. After her latest
round of thievery, she had
left traces leading to a
certain shack in the middle
of the Driftwood Drag.
Upon farther investigation,
Shadow and his brother had
discovered that the shack was
home to a very persistent
swamp hag. She had shoved
something that tasted like
river moss down their throats
and muttered something about
“two bulky idiots running
around the swamp”.

She then stuffed a worn sheet of paper into Shadow’s hand, and pushed them both out of her house into the bog. The only good part of their fruitless little adventure was getting to see the look on Crimson’s face when shadow read the sheet of paper aloud.

“Better luck next time!
Xoxo, Stella.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“You have to admit, Crimson. She is pretty
clever.” Shadow said while sloshing away from
the old shack. The large Guardian let out a
deep growl. His scales gleaming
menacingly in the dying sunlight.
“She may have won this battle,
But that doesn’t mean she’ll win the war!”
Shadow rolled his eyes. Although he was mostly
sure Crimson couldn’t see it with all his piles of
over-the-top hunting gear in the way. “One day
I will catch that puny little Fae, and when I do,
I swear she’ll be sorry for messing with
my treasure!”

There he goes again, Shadow thought. Ever since Crimson’s hoard had been stolen, it had been nothing but: “Mark my words. I will receive vengeance on that stunted beetle!” And: “Prepare yourself, Shadow. Today is the day that filthy pilferer will fall!” Often Shadow hoped that they’d strike another dead end just to have a chance of knocking Crimson down a peg or two; but crimson was usually annoyingly undeterred.

“Oh, get off your high horse!” Shadow said. “Maybe if you weren’t so busy monologuing all the time, we’d have caught her already!” Crimson shot him a “Why’d you have to ruin my awesome speech?” Type of glare. “Sometimes I forget you're supposed to be on my side.” He grumbled. and then turned to launch himself back into the sky with a beat of his heavily adorned wings.

Guilt sloshed through shadow like the tainted water in the bog. The truth is, sometimes he forgot which side he’s on himself. Irritating as he is, Crimson was still his brother! They had been through so much together and yet- and yet…

There was something in Stella’s eyes that made him forget that he was supposed to be capturing her. Something hypnotizing about her delicate features, and clever teasing smile. She is a thief! He scolded himself. My job is to bring dragons like her to justice.
But as he tore through the tangled canopy to catch up with his brother, he couldn’t help but notice his heart beating faster at the thought of his brother’s sworn enemy.
