The Dark Feather Clan
While most large Wind clans like to reside in the floating kite communities, the Dark Feather Clan is different. A secluded and mysterious group of dragons, they prefer to keep mostly to themselves with the exceptions of the wind dragons and flight representatives that represent them to others. They are most widely known for the Windstorm Warriors, a group of elite fighters that are all Spirals, mostly wind and lightning but with a few exceptions. Beyond these clan champions, the wind dragons that lead, and the Flight Representatives, very little is known about the rest of the clan. In fact, most think that is all there is to it. While they are wrong, the clan prefers to keep it this way.
Living in an ancient lair deep within the Reedcleft Ascent, their home is a cavernous network of tunnels. The main entrance is near the top of the Ascent, with colorful kites and wind catchers decorating the area. At least two of the Windstorm Warriors are always on guard, the spirals having trained and conditioned themselves to resist their twitchy and hyper active nature to be vigilant sentries. The ledge just outside of the entrance is covered in wind whipped grasses and bamboos, located on the steep cliffs at the rear of the Ascent which provides a beautiful view of the Sea of a Thousand Currents and the lands beyond.
Atop of the Ascent, above the entrance to the lair, is a giant tree whose roots go deep and stabilizes the giant cavern below it. In the branches of this tree dwell sparkling green dragons who are a curious offshoot of the clan. Known as the peacock dragons, they are beautiful if somewhat vain, these clan members serve as additional lookouts as well as nature representatives. They also care for the tree and other plants within this part of their territory. Within the gnarled and twisted roots at the base of the tree there is also a den for those in this group who do not wish to perch in the tree branches.
Past the entrance of the clan’s main lair, one would come into the main chamber which is known as The Cathedral. Rightly named for the spacious cave with a high domed ceiling. This is the gathering place for the members of the clan and where they receive what few visitors they get. Mostly the wind dragons and flight reps can be seen here. A few tunnels leading to adjoining, smaller caverns where the wind dragons, Windstorm Warriors, and Flight Representatives reside. The ceiling of The Cathedral has been decorated with glowing fungi, bugs, and items that give it the appearance of a starry sky. In fact, if one looks closely they may see movement. Dragons with starry hides blending into the sparkling ceiling and living upon small ledges high up on the walls.
In the far rear of the cave there is a secretive tunnel that slopes down and twists and turns into it comes to a chamber where some strange dragons reside. Colored in in bright greens, these dragons are a curious lot, many of them alchemists and some having become Bogsneaks as a result of their dabbling. Some of them even a strange otherworldly glow to them. They do not like strangers coming into their abode and will only tolerate visitors if their leaders have mandated it. Otherwise, strange dragons will be met with hostility. Only members of the clan being allowed to pass through, and even them with apprehension. Many of the clan's hatchlings are frightened of this bunch.
Even further back, beyond where the strange green dragons reside, a narrow passage plunges far down into darkness. Here are where the most secretive of the clan's residents reside. Dark and glowing dragons fly up and down vast abyss, while others climb and cling to the walls. Dens have been carved out of the stone, which serve as places for these dragons to live. It seems to go on forever, however, if one plunges deep enough they will come to water where the sea has come into the cave. More glowing figures can be seen as water, and water inclined dragons can be found here. Passing their dens and diving deeper, one will then find the secret second entrance to the lair, going out into the Water Flight's domain.
Very few know it, but long ago wind and water dragons both inhabited this lair and decided to become one clan together under the banner of the Wind Flight. The Dark Feather Clan has long had good relations with its neighboring flights, especially that of Water. This is why so many have sought to live in this unique place, having found them after following rumors and discovering the true nature of the clan. However, one must prove themselves worthy to join and learn their secrets. All the dragons here are brought in for some reason or another. Very few of them breed, and most that are hatched and raised here do not stay. Either following their wind instincts and traveling to other places beyond, or proudly being trained by the Windstorm Warrior and going on to join the ranks of the Windsinger.
