Clan Info

Once a mighty clan of mages, split into the Court of Light and the Court of Shadows...Petty feuds, bloodshed, twisted games of power - an everyday reality in the ancient magus clan, and ultimately the vices which led to their downfall. Their descendants roam in shameful exile, wearily travelling wastelands in a dusty caravan as ghosts of ancient mages cling to them and whisper temptations and tales of glory...

The strict hierarchy of the clan was decided not by bloodlines, wealth or democracy, but by raw, arcane power. Only those of extraordinary magical ability would ascend to the top of the ranks...In theory. Things had grown complicated in the last few decades of greatness, corruption, manipulation swelling and destroying the great clan from within.

The Major Arcana was a clan made up of two main factions - the Court of Light and the Court of Shadows. Each Court had twenty-two positions, each of them having their own distinct duties and requirements. The Courts were supposed to work together to keep the Clan functioning, the contrast of Light and Shadow keeping everything balanced. Aside from the Courts, there were the commoners - dragons who were not a part of the nobility, who were either working for the Courts or were civilians in their care. In the current day, most dragons of the clan are descendants of the commoners, though even those who have noble blood do not boast about it. It is more a curse than it is a blessing, as those with noble blood are haunted by the ghosts of their ancestors, beckoning them to return the clan to its ancient power...

The Court of Light
Mages with powers that were outward, visible, perhaps even flashy comprised this Court. Opulence, intrigue and overblown drama were dominant here, each noble of the Court playing their part in both the outward, theatrical feuds, sloppy assassinations and also the covert manipulations and hidden mind games. Members of this Court were more prone to corruption, and their belief in the ancient rules of the Major Arcana was shakey at best. They are largely blamed for the exile of the clan, as it is believed that the rot which infested the clan began there, among the greedy, arrogant and corrupt. Praise of the Light Court is largely frowned upon, and the side of the ancestral shrine dedicated to them is noticeably less well kept.

The Court of Shadows
Unlike nobles of the Light Court, these dragons were upholders of the ancient rules which kept the Clan together. They abided by the rules of the hierarchy, accepting only those with exceptional power and not wavering to manipulation, intimidation or bribery. Mysterious and oftentimes eccentric, the nobles of this court were known for their brutal efficency, their actions whispered about either in reverence or in fear. Within the Clan they were respected, the commoners trusting them more than the Light Court, meanwhile outsiders of the Clan barely knew of their existence...until it was too late for them to squawk. The Shadow Court is still thought of with some respect, as they fought against the corruption and elitism which was oh so frequent in the Light Court. Also, unlike nobility of the Light Court, they did not inbreed with one another for the sake of powerful offspring, instead frequently creating nests with commoners, embracing the hatchlings as their own. These actions have led to them being remembered favourably by the generations which followed them.
