The Whiteout was once growing steadily. Young Ice dragons seemed drawn to the enclave. The founders saw that populations were rising faster than they could clear space for them. Neighbouring clans were made so it could keep expanding, each having a different fundamentally rooted name, the Whiteout Tundra or the Whiteout Iceberg for example.
The area gained popularity as more and more dragons heard about it. There were even a few permanent residents from close flights, Flower being one of the first. But one day, a mysterious disease struck the entirety of the Ice territory, affecting only dragons born there. It was stopped by several master magicians, but the Whiteout areas were devastated.
Not a single Ice dragon survived, and all but Flower who were not struck down ran. The only remainder pledged to guard the old areas, especially the original one, and welcome anyone else who wanted to settle.
But legends spread, saying that it was cursed and haunted. Visitors were sparse, and were either lost or passing quickly through. Flower grew lonelier; it was only her, the vast empty ice field, and the occasional blizzard. She still longed for any dragon to come see her, even if they wouldn't stay.
Flower remained vigilant every single day, searching for any dragon to welcome. But one day while gathering food, she happened upon a worn-out spellbook in a safe cave. She was intrigued and brought it back to study it. Upon closer inspection, its faded label read Spoken Magic for the Average Dragon.She read it in her spare time, wondering why someone would leave something so valuable unguarded.
