"Listen," Mother says, huddled up next to her hatchlings. "Do you hear it?"

The new dragonets shake their heads, looking up to their mother in fear. They've never been outside this place, this cave they were hatched in. They didn't know the stories. They didn't understand yet.

"If you listen closely, sometimes," Mother says, "you can hear a quiet ringing. A distant one." She wraps a wing around her young, shielding them from the horrors to come. They were young. Too young. But they had to know.

"If you hear it, the Gods will come for you."

"The Gods?"

"Yes, darling, the Gods. They know you. They see you. Nothing you do will ever surprise them, for they know all." Mother ushers her children across the den and lays them all down where they need to be. "Now, get to sleep. Lest you be punished by the Angels of this world."

If you go to this den now, you will find Mother and the ashes of her children. For when They come for you, you must know that there will be nothing left.
