When a virus is about to shed from a cell, it'll go into a period of growth. So many virus particles are replicated that a dark spot can be seen within the cell when viewed under a microscope. These ominous dark spots, called inclusion bodies, or sometimes "owl eyes," are a harbinger of death upon the cell. Once enough viruses have accumulated, they bust out of the cell membrane, each one ready to find and infect a new host.
