River stood at the edge of the trees, hand stroking Ardeigh's dark scales. She shifted the pack on her back. "Guess that's home now, Ardi." The female guardian dragon snurfed uncertainly, but followed her master as they moved out into the open.
It was as her sister had promised: a tundra male, gentle and sporting tufts of wooly brown fur, slept at the entrance to the cave. A gift to help her and her dragon to start a clan - assuming they could win his favor. Assuming they were compatable at all. Some received less cordial gifts than others.
River tensed, hand reaching for her bag and the various methods it held for calming an adult dragon. But the tufted beat only raised its head, snuffed at her and Ardeigh...and let out a happy moan. River relaxed as Ardeigh brushed past, the two dragons sniffing each other over in welcome. An easy start.
Her stomach grumbled, and River munched on a berry loaf as she watched her dragon - dragons - befriend each other. It wouldn't all be easy. But she felt light as she started to set up her camp, in this lair that would be her rite of passage.
Only the best Breeders bred dragons for the glory of the tribe. And she would be the best.
