I'd rather be a good man than a great king.

Far from the Pillar in the heart of old Dragonhome, westward along the Breach, the land ends in the lukewarm froth of the sea. In the smallest chasm of the Breach's smallest fork, the golden patriarch Aegis Aurum founded the West Coast Clan. He had shared the Earthshaker's sorrow at the fracturing of the Pillar and the distrust among Flights; with two like-minded peers the Guardian left the sea of his birth to found a clan in the dragons' ancestral home. This new clan would be a secret haven for those who wished to live outside the confines of Flight rivalry, safe from the Beastclans, in hopes that the world might one day know peace.

The canyon itself is unremarkable; one crevasse among the many reaching fingers of the Breach. From the air it's impossible to see the sloped canyon floor, with it's silky sand warmed from the core of the earth. It's hard to make out the shallow dimples where dragons sleep at night, to detect the rock-like eggs tucked in the lee of the steep walls. Standing high up on the plains' surface, the gentile swelling and crashing of the sea is lost among the rumbling rocks.

Despite Dragonhome's reputation for inhospitable conditions, in the secret lair of the West Coast Clan living is easy. During the day, dragons pluck sea sparrows from their flocks or drag the sea for fish. They polish their scales in sand baths till they shine, and dry bellies wet with sea-spray on the warm floor. Some carve aeries from the canyon walls, which come alive at sundown with the glow of bioluminescent fungi. At night, the croaking of arroyo toads and hum of wind through the canyon sing a natural lullaby.

In the years after claiming this place, Aegis Aurum made a curious discovery: living so close to the Starfall Isles had exposed him to trace amounts of arcane radiation. Those dragons who live or are born in this place have hides crusted with minerals, gems, or shining stones - colloquially referred to as a 'gembond'. Though not all dragons of the West Coast Clan express this trait, most do, and use their vibrant colors to identify one another.
