Because healthy soils are rich and dark and full of life, held together by the bioadhesives formed by bacteria and chemicals interacting. They hold water and provide nutrients for plants which root in them. Fungi, bacteria, and insects break down materials in the soil to produce nutrient-rich humus. [s]Also, soil scientists are personally offended by people calling soil, "dirt."[/s]
