Care of Magical Creatures. Even the name seemed enticing, full of unspoken adventure and discovery. You hurriedly make your way, dashing past the main entrance of Biomagica Academy, and find yourself in a clearing resting on the edge of the school groves.
All around you, smells of nature perfume the air. A light, airy aroma of flowers, sweet
grass, earth, and bark make you restless. It seems that your fellow classmates have found their way to the picturesque meadow quite fine, and were admiring odd, wisp-like lanterns that hung from the nearby trees. Giving off a soft, creamy glow, they provided a romantic lighting underneath the shade of the hardy oaks and whimsical willows.
Your eyes gaze over the scene, and eventually come to rest on a weathered wood desk, overrun with vines. Twisting around the furniture like a mess of emerald serpents, they permeated through every crack and crevice. You wonder to yourself how someone could possibly tolerate working on such a table.
The flamboyant Tundra that sat on the faux log stool behind the desk seemed to have no concerns on that matter. She displayed an acid-green plumage, which had been covered by a haphazard assortment of flashy apparel, hues of every shade of the rainbow visible in her choice of dress. You can’t help but take your eyes off the peculiar-looking drake, questioning her supposedly professional dress, before you notice the animals. Two cats, one spotted and one a faded gray, were curled up on a sheet set atop the table, sleeping contentedly. Another feline seemed to have taken over the teacher’s shoulder, purring as a curious bird groomed its hair.

After a few minutes, the Tundra’s viridian eyes swept over the crowd of students to do a quick count. Seeing that all were present, she cleared her throat, and began speaking, a light smile lingering on her visage.
“Good evening, class! Welcome to Care of Magical Creatures. I’m your professor, Lady.” Her tone was friendly, with the slightest hint of mischief noticeable. Her cats perk up at the sudden commotion, but quickly fall into disinterest and go back to their own activities. The Tundra craned her fur-lined neck to smile fondly at the myriad number of creatures surrounding her,
“As you can see, the Viridian Labyrinth is home to quite a few critters. These are some familiars!” She gestured to the felines lazing about, the bird perched on her shoulder, and gently pulled a terrified-looking toad out from her hat, giving the creature a pat before moving it back.
“And this,” The teacher paused in her speech for just a moment, very obviously for dramatic effect. “This is also a familiar.” A shrill whistle rang out, high and clear in the silent clearing. For a moment, your eyes dart around- what had the lady called?
Your search ended when you noticed the shadow looming overhead. A silhouette rockets down at a frightening speed, on a collision course with the professor. Just as you’re sure it’s about to hit her, it spreads its massive orange wings and makes a lazy glide down to land. It settles beside the professor, a majestic beast that resembles a chimeric combination of a lion and a eagle.
“This is a variant of the cloud dancers. The more stuck-up variant, actually.” At the Tundra’s jest, the familiar puffed up and ruffled its feathers, giving Lady a fierce glare. It seemed offended. She gave a laugh, and continued on talking, lightly stroking the creature’s feathers with her claws. It made a. . . sarcastic chirping noise, and turned away, though it still let her pamper it.
“In this course, your assignment will be simple; go out there and gather items from different familiars and creatures.” She starts, looking around at the students with a glint in her eye, her pupils shining with an adventurous spirit. “A hands on approach is the best way of learning, and you can’t get more hands on then going out and seeing these wonders for yourself. Sometimes, if you’re lucky enough, one of these critters may choose to follow you home. A bond with a familiar is a special relationship, so consider yourself lucky if they choose you.”
A sense of excitement runs through the crowd of students, along with an uproar of murmurs. It was clear that, despite the few scared pupils, most of them were eager to begin their journeys out to explore and discover.
“Now, there are rules I expect you to follow. Not only for your safety, but for me to adequately grade you on your progress,” She gestured at the pile of sheets that were on the desk.
Parchment crowded the cracked surface of the table, colored a musty hue, and riddled with holes and scratches. “Here’s a list of all the familiars and items that will earn you points. For items, I will need you to submit your findings to me. For familiars, I only need you to show them to me. The familiars I’ve marked down should be relatively easy… I think.”
The professor grabbed a sheet from the pile at random, and gave it a quick glance over, before shrugging. “Oh well. A little sense of challenge never hurt anyone.”
At this point, Lady pointed to a speckled Fae sleepily resting on a branch of willow high above the group. She was colored in shades of the forest, and dressed in clothing fit for a ranger.

She yawned, and re-centered the askew headpiece atop her brow, before flying down to sit on the vine-strewn desk.
The professor grinned as she looked over the varied students. Pupils from all four of the academy’s houses, all in high spirits and ready to begin. She spoke slowly and deliberately, as if teasing the group,
“And to make it a bit more fun, I have prizes in store for students with the most points at the end of the week. A little competition is always healthy! Now then, line up and grab a reference sheet, be safe and have fun!”

Pupils and teachers alike long since retreated to the warmth of hearth and home, the lone Fae dutifully stayed at the vine-strewn teacher's desk. Vaguely wondering whether it was merely a result of the day's excitement, she unconsciously rustled her aching wings, trying to allow them to loosen and relax.
Quill in hand, she started the arduous task of transcribing and grading papers. Assistants had duties, after all. Guided by the light of a small but lively candle, accompanied by her drowsy but determined Sprite, and weary but lighthearted, she continued to write. Her feathered pen bled ink in an ardent scrawl. Her pace eventually became so haphazard that droplets of ink bounded off the page and splattered her membranous wings with their ichor.
Chuckling softly at how colorful of a mess she was, Alma wiped off her intricate dress and directed her gaze upwards, giving herself a moment's respite. Assisting Professor Lady in her teaching was cumbersome, but rewarding beyond compare. It was the enamored, curious, and joyful faces of the students that drove her to return the next morning, hoping to see more of those shining expressions.
The candle burned out, allowing darkness to creep in and blanket the sleeping Fae. The drake was curled up on the desk, tail coiled around her pen. A tidy stack of papers lay next to the vial of ink, ready for review with the coming of daybreak.

It seems that Alma and Lady have laid out a fine assortment of food out on the tables, ranging from roasted insects, to only slightly burned vegetables, to... odd, jelly-like substances. The Fae was nowhere in sight- she had donned an invisibility cloak, and was enjoying herself immensely going about to scare the students. But where was Lady. . .?
