After considerable investigation I have found that dragons eat in this order:
1. Faes (insects), Tundras (Plants), Ridgebacks (Seafood), and Wildclaws (Meat)
2. Pearlcatchers (Plants and Insects) and Mirrors (Meat and Seafood)
3. Spirals (Insects and Meat) and Snappers (Plants and Seafood)
4. Skydancers (Insects and Plants)
5. Guardians (Meat, Seafood, Plants, and Insects)
6. Imperials (Seafood, Meat, Plants, and Insects)
7. Coatls (Seafood) and Nocturnes (Insects and Meat).
With the exception of Coatls, the general rule is that the fewer food types a dragon will eat, the higher a priority it will be when you're feeding them.
The exact type of food you are feeding does not affect the order they will be fed in, and older dragons eat first, but that only counts within their own breed. An older dragon of one breed will not eat before a younger dragon of another.
An older Imperial will eat before a younger Imperial, but an older Imperial will not eat before a younger Guardian.
Hopefully this will let new and old users alike manage their food stores effectively. The admins have said that they intend to work on this mechanic, although the details of how they plan to change it have not been given. For now, this is how things are running.
On to the evidence!
