[indent]Retro-futurism is an avant-garde artistic movement centralized around viewing the future through the eyes of the past, via art, literature, architecture, fashion, or film. It seeks to represent the anticipation of what might be to come, capturing those precious moments of wonder and excitement before a great reveal. The, "can you imagine?" And, "what if?" And, "how cool would that be?" All encapsulated into something which feels familiar and yet entirely new. It explores the relationship between yesterday, today, and tomorrow. This movement serves as a visual link between “what is” and “what may be.” Striving for the future while also stubbornly reaching back into the past for inspiration and guidance. The Miami sunset is a classic feature of this aesthetic, as are neon and magenta grid patterns. The essence of night life. Inspired by the rise of the personal computer and the age of technology, triangles, “glitch” effects, technological symbols and/or logos often appear in this aesthetic as do classical statues. The future is grim, technology is overtaking the usefulness of humanity, and oftentimes works from this movement tend to express some form of political unrest. The iconic image of a cyborg smoking a cigarette or the robot taxi driver fall into this aesthetic, which asks the viewer to dig deep to discover their own answers to problematic questions. Think of this aspect of the aesthetic as a “slice of life” variation, ranging from dark to light and all levels in between. What is retro-futurism?
Retro-futurism is an avant-garde artistic movement centralized around viewing the future through the eyes of the past, via art, literature, architecture, fashion, or film. It seeks to represent the anticipation of what might be to come, capturing those precious moments of wonder and excitement before a great reveal. The, "can you imagine?" And, "what if?"
