A Shadow/Light Subspecies

In the deep darkness of the Tangled Wood, a peculiar subspecies of dragons was born... These dragons had the goal to guide lost travelers to safety, or to trick them into following them, never to be seen again...
While we're not certain why they were created, or why these dragons adapted this way, we are certain they've begun to spread over Sornieth.

Lore, recommended apparel, and common familiars

Guide and Trickster Wisps have an unknown origin. However, the first recorded of the subspecies are Laverna and her mate, Hasamelis. Originally, it was believed that all members of this subspecies descended from this pair. This has been proven false, giving that, as time went on, more and more Wisps began to appear.
What we do know for certain is that the type of Wisp is generally dependent on color. Guiding Wisps generally have blue wings of varying shades, and Trickster Wisps usually have wings of a purple color range. We have also observed Guiding Wisps falling into trickery, becoming more like their devious counterparts, usually by the persuasion of a Trickster Wisp. The same can be said for Trickster Wisps; they can be redeemed and made into Guiding Wisps if influenced by a Guide.
One constant is that Wisps love lanterns. In fact, as they age, each one will find a tail bauble to call their own. It's common for Guiding Wisps to wear brass or bronze tail baubles if they don't have a mate, while Tricksters usually wear silver or bronze tail baubles instead. Pairs of mates have been seen with gold baubles, said to indicate the strength of their relationship. Some dragons across Sornieth have reported that they received copper baubles from a Guide or a Trickster for befriending or outsmarting them, respectively.
In more recent years, they've been reported branching out from the Tangled Wood. Their first appearance after departing the Shadowbinder's realm was the Sunbeam Ruins. Their dark eyes and bodies were a striking contrast to the bright atmosphere, but their goal was the same: to guide others, or to trick them into the unknown. Their most popular location was the Hewn City, but they gradually spread farther until they weren't uncommon at all. Since then, they've been spotted all over Sornieth, leading wayward travelers to safety or danger.
With the spread of Wisps has come several variants of the original subspecies, including what is called Star-backed and Void Wisps. There are likely more, but these are yet to be discovered.

Guides, Tricksters, and their variants aren't usually overly fashionable. They have been noted to wear very specific apparel on occasions, however. Guides and Tricksters wear tail baubles in particular. Guides usually wear brass or copper if not mated, and Tricksters wear silver or bronze if not mated. Pairs of mates wear gold baubles. Other than this, most apparel is free game for this subspecies. Feel free to suggest some!

[columns]One of the most common variations of this subspecies would be Guiding Wisps. While these were initially believed to be male-exclusive, our studies have found otherwise.
Colonies of Guiding Wisps tend to be small, with usually only a handful of pairs and the same amount of unpaired dragons present. Rather than be tricky and clever like Tricksters, Guides are more often aloof. They're renowned for the abilities as a mediator in the clans they settle down in. Guides are calm and collected, and far more patient than Tricksters. This comes at a flaw, however. Guides are also more stubborn than Tricksters. They tend to sulk and pout whenever things don't go the way they wanted. As a coping mechanism, they'll often exhibit an odd bit of trickery; They tend to play small, innocent pranks on their clanmates when they feel upset or angered. This always concludes with a shower of gifts and apologies whenever they've calmed down.
Guides, like Tricksters, are always either Nocturnes or Faes. Their primary color ranges from Coal to Shadow, with their primary genes always being either Speckle (the more common of the two) or Iridescent. Their secondary color is always in the Iris to Caribbean range. Secondary gene is usually Shimmer, but have also been reported to be any gene except for Daub, Facet, Paint, or Hypnotic. In addition, Toxin has only been seen in Guides with the Iridescent primary gene. The tertiary gene is always Underbelly or Capsule, with the color always being Moon, Orca, or White.[nextcol][/columns]
[columns][nextcol]Trickster Wisps, similarly, were initially believed to be only female. We've found that is actually color-based or environmentally-based, as opposed to gender-based. It is unknown where Tricksters take their victims.
Tricksters are, as their name suggests, the more devious of the most common variants. Legend has it that each Trickster gained their mischief from Laverna. We're not entirely certain on why they choose to trick wanderers - some believe that it's instinct. They seem to have this nature from birth, and while they can be swayed, it's a very difficult path for them. They've been reported to act as Guides on occasion when they believe it would be more useful to do so. They're also more impatient than their Guide counterparts. If stalled for long enough, a victim will be left alone as opposed to taken away. These Wisps love riddles and mind games; so much so, in fact, that anyone to beat them in a battle of wits gains their respect and a bauble. This bauble is an indicator to other Tricksters that they're among a friend. Normally tricky Wisps will lead any companions to safety, as well as food, water, and shelter. They are also shown the Trickster's secret stash of stolen items.
Trickster Wisps have the same genes and colors as Guiding Wisps, except their secondary range is Blackberry to Eggplant.[/columns]
[columns]Star-Backed Wisps are among the most uncommon and unusual variants of the subspecies. We know very little about them.
Star-Backed Wisps are curious creatures. They generally avoid large groups, and live mostly solitary lives. This makes it incredibly rare to see one residing in a clan, but it's been reported several times before. They choose not to wear baubles, being a definite outlier of the subspecies. In fact, the only thing that truly links them to other Wisps is their coloration. In clans, they are often healers and advisors. They all have poor eyesight, however, and have been seen with lights on their heads to assist their sight. It's said that the moon painted their backs with silvery stripes.
Appearance-wise, Star-Backed Wisps aren't very different from their counterparts. Their only difference is their lack of a Capsule or Underbelly gene. Star-Backs tend to have Thylacine most commonly, but have also been reported with Firefly on the rare occasion. They've been barely linked as Star-Backs, only for their star-like appearance.[nextcol][/columns]
[columns][nextcol]Void Wisps are the newest discovered variant of the subspecies. Even less is known about them, but they seem to be the rarest reported variant yet.
Void Wisps are elusive creatures, even more solitary than Star-Backs. Voids aren't fond of showing emotion in the slightest. All recorded Voids thus far have been either ill-tempered or stoic. These rare Wisps very, very rarely join clans. They, much like Star-Backs, refuse to wear baubles. However, Voids tend to wear hoods and similar clothing.
Void Wisps, curiously, are predominantly Fae dragons, but can be Nocturnes as well. Unlike their Guide and Trickster cousins, they have an entirely dark range of colors. Their primary color range is Black to Midnight and their secondary color range is Black to Shadow. In addition to the usual genes for Wisps, Speckle and Iridescent, they can also have Starmap. Their secondary genes are reportedly Morph, Peregrine, Shimmer, or Saturn, although Saturn seems to be rare. Their tertiary colors are in the Oilslick to Shadow range, and their tertiary genes seem to be any gene except Filigree, Capsule, Thylacine, or Crackle.[/columns]

Guide, Trickster, and Star-Backed Wisps were originally made by ForbiddenDeity! This thread was made to revive the subspecies, considering how I'm was the last breeder of the original Guiding & Trickster Wisps. Thank you for making them!

In addition to those three, I'm also considering giving away the following adults. I've had them for a while, but due to my lack of space, I believe it may be better for them to find a new home.
