In the ancient days, misfortune was not only a concept but a set of entities, and these spirits of destruction existed solely to introduce adversity in the lives of dragonkind. They fed upon the distress of those they afflicted, and the accumulation of this valuable substance gave them further power.
What began as a minor nuisance for dragons eventually swelled into a substantial threat, and some dragons began to worship and aid the spirits, believing that they themselves could obtain power by allying with those dark beings. They involved themselves deeply in matters they did not fully understand, guided by charismatic leaders who were skilled at coercing the vulnerable and gullible of society to join in the worship. These dragons practiced black magic fervently and fanatically, empowering the spirits while bloodying their claws and minds with sacrifice and cruelty.
One day, the barrier between spirits and dragons was broken in a horrendous mistake during a ritual, and the spirits cursed the worshippers, inhabiting them and turning their bodies into puppets for their own purposes. The unlucky dragons developed a characteristic appearance upon being cursed; their vibrant colors faded to light shades of tan and cream, and they became marked with a skeletal pattern as though death itself had claimed them. Indeed, they were rather like corpses, for in most cases the personality and consciousness of the afflicted dragon was obliterated, and their body became a home and a tool for the spirit which cursed it. If a spirit were driven out of a cursed dragon, the dragon would not survive. The spirits yearned to cause misfortune, and thus the dragons they inhabited often became destructive and malicious, though some were satisfied with simple trickery.
The descendants of afflicted dragons provided ideal vessels for spirits, and
upon their hatching one of the hundreds of spirits would rush in to claim and inhabit the vulnerable offspring. In some cases, the transformation went awry, and hatchlings retained remnants of their true personality. This was a combination which often caused a great deal of distress to both the true personality and the spirit, as the two of them were in conflict for control of their shared form, and there were often abnormalities in the relationship between spirit and host that made these odd hybrids difficult for cursed dragons to destroy.
Such beings were sometimes the victim of conversion attempts from cursed dragons, and those who seemed to have particularly strong personalities were cast out into the wilderness to die. But they did not die; rather, they banded together and turned their backs on the dark magic of the community they had been born in. They understood deeply the pain that spirits could cause, and so they trained to combat them, devoting themselves to the knowledge and practice of a pure form of magic which drew from the energy of the earth and nature.
They had been touched by spirit magic during their attempted conversion, and it was this which gave them strength against the spirits and their hosts. After much strife and conflict these defective hosts were able to eliminate the cursed dragons and put an end to the spirits’ reign of terror. Unfortunately, the spirits remained hundreds strong and undeterred, and recently they have begun to manipulate and inhabit dragons again, causing the same deleterious effects to their hosts as they did many years ago.
A new group of spirit worshippers arises, and as new hatchlings are born and inhabited, the ancient war begins once again. The defective outcasts follow in the footsteps of their predecessors to combat the evil of the spirits, and only time will tell whether the spirits or their opponents will be victorious. This subset of the Cursed are not as dangerous as others, for they delight in pranks and tricks that often prove to be quite harmless, if a little traumatic. They are clever tricksters who bring about suffering in indirect ways, such as laying traps, luring weary travelers away from their destination, and turning friends against one another.
However, not all pranks are easily rectified, and can result in injury or death. This does not seem to bother the jesting spirits so they are best avoided despite their more "tame" demeanor. These are the variety of Cursed that strike fear into the hearts of others at their mere mention, the sort that plague hatchlings' nightmares and dance in the flames before frightened travelers. They are sadistic and lack any conscience, seeking only the thrill of bloodshed and torment. Many lost their sanity centuries ago and their manic thoughts result in massacre and widespread agony.
Driven by the need to feed upon the torment of innocent dragons, they pillage, murder, and torture where ever they go, leaving settlements in ruin if their inhabitants are not wise enough to relocate. Most of this subset are female, and thus must wait at night to steal away hatchlings or dragons and take them to their choice area of sacrifice, typically in areas that are washed in the moon's mystical light. Thus spawns the tale that warns dragons of pools of moonlight, for the moon's cold power is favoured by the Cursed dragons.

• be muted or dark colours (white/greyscale count as muted!)
• you must exalt 9 hatchlings and send picture proof to me. this does not need to be done all at once. i can keep a tally list if you need time to accomplish the ritual.
