Many, many years ago, a disease broke out, one of the millions brought forth by the the Plaguebringer. However, there was one unique thing about it- it only affected dragons with certain genes and colors. It is unsure who it infected first, but the symptoms were unmistakable. It drained the infected of their plasma along with a few other vital nutrients found in your blood. To fix this problem, the infected turned to their only solution: blood drinking.
However, this only worsened the spread. If the infected bit a dragon with the right requirements, they too gained the disease. Not only was it spread via bites, it is also spread via lineage. Any dragon born to one of these vampiric dragons that inherited their genes also inherited the disease.
Because of the need to drink blood from others, dragons with larger fangs tended to live longer and healthier that those who do not. After many generations, most of these dragons have developed a set of front fangs much larger than any normal dragon's, even normally peaceful breeds like Snappers.
After many years, the so-called "Blood Butterflies", or "Blooderflies," named from he ever present blood colored butterfly pattern on the wings, had began to multiply, forming a haphazard organization. Some got together, attempting to find a cure for the disease. However, many of them have just accepted it, and found solace in knowing that they aren't alone. They've formed books, clubs, and associations to share details of the disease, finding what helped, what hurt, and what satisfied their hunger.
Animal blood often did little, it sated their appetite for little time. Beastclan blood does little more, but does more than animal. Often, the more reptilian a creature is, the more appetizing and filling it is. However, dragon blood is essential to the survival of a Blood Butterfly. Many have agreed that each Flight's blood tastes different, a guide on taste and recipes even being published by one Blooderfly (However, blood is often consumed raw). Light blood is often considered the best, and Plague, the worst.
Due to this, many Blooderflies migrated from Plague to Light territory. There, they flourished, many of them laying nests that hatched to become Light-orientated hatchlings. The natives of Light, however, were angry. They demanded that these 'vampires' be destroyed or chased out.
A bounty was put on every Blooderfly's head, thousands being captured and dragged to the Ice kingdom to be imprisoned. Of course, that did not stop them. Many still reside in both the Plaguelands and the dark ruins of the Lightlands. And, now, many reside in the dark, cold caverns of Ice, because not every prisoner can be locked up forever.
Current Standings in Flights:
Plague: Welcomed and accepted. Bears most of the population. In plague, it doesn't matter who or what you are, as long as you can prove yourself. They're all Plaguebringer's children there.
Arcane: Feared, but legal. Arcane, being the ever curious they are, often convince them to test on them to find the nature of the disease and sometimes, ways to cure it... though, so far, no success.
Earth: Banned from entering and feared. Earth citizens are often much more friendly and calm than their plague neighbors, and want nothing to do with Blood Butterflies. If caught, you're supposed to be sent to the Icewarden's prison, though authorities often take a blind eye when they're killed...
Nature: Hunted. Though it isn't illegal for Blooderflies to take residence there, some clans have (very legal) Blooderfly hunts in which they'll seek out whole clans and kill them. If you get caught, it's your problem.
Shadow: Banned from residence, but lax. Though they're illegal, most Shadow citizens don't really care. As long as they stay out of their way, pretty much everyone's willing to turn a blind eye- and if you're caught, you're not killed, simply exiled, a rather clam punishment compared to some.
Water: Bountied. Though, very few Blooderflies even try to come to water, since there are so many oracles that could easily find and turn them in. Any dragon who reports a Blooderfly get a sum of treasure, and the Blooderflies are hunted down, caught, and sent to Icewarden's prison.
Light: Banned, bountied, and hunted. Light is the mot strict on rules, mostly because they house the second largest population. If a Blooderfly is caught, they hold a short trial before being immediately killed. However, there are many organizations down deep in Light's ruins that can aid a caught Blooderfly, or even hide them well i the first place.
Lightning: Legal, though drinking blood is not. A Blooderfly cannot be charge with any crimes unless they are caught drinking blood of another dragon. However, in few cases, it's easy to 'convince' an authority of something that didn't really happen...
Wind: Banned from residency. Wind is probably the most averagely strict. Though it's illegal for a Blooderfly to set up residence there, if caught, they'l hold a simply trial and be sent to Icewarden. Nothing overly strict, but not easy to get them to look the other way.
Fire: Legal, but feared. While Blooderflies are allowed to home there, many disapprove and are trying to change the law- but, so so far, to no avail, as they're still legal. However, it's easy for a Blooderfly to get charged with something that may or may not have happened...
Ice: Legal, but hunted. While there re no laws banning a Blooderfly from entering or living there, many are often on the hunt for them anyways, due to nearly the entire population on Ice being escapees from Icewarden's prison. If an escapee is caught, there's a 50/50 chance of being put to death or re-imprisoned, depending on your judge or your crimes.
