Have you even been desperate to get something done? Have you ever felt like if you couldn't do one thing right, your life would be left without purpose? Have you ever felt like you COULDN'T fail, even if what you wanted to do was impossible?
Chances are: you were feeling exactly as the distressed hauntings used to do.
Distressed hauntigs are dragons who died right before they could achieve a goal they had been striving towards, right after failing a task they deemed extremely important or felt utter despair right before their death. The shock of their demise, combined with their will to live and finish their task turned their wings and bodies into a white color. The only thing that really remained the same was their tertiary (which is visable). Often when a dragon is presumed dead, but no one can find their corpse, it's assumed they became a distressed haunting.
Distressed hauntings can be any breed of dragon, male or female, and can come from any flight. It is said that they even change their flight depending on where they died. A nature dragon who died in the scarred wastelands can lose it's anlighnment with nature and gain the magic of plague. Desperate to keep living, these beings will seek something to do, and to excel at. Some distressed hauntings guard certain places, while others take another profession, preferably one that gives them lots of respect and knowledge.
Those who decide to join a clan with their new job, are terrified of moving on to the afterlife or being abandoned, and as such desperately cling to anyone who seems to respect them, forcing their way into the still living dragon's minds and hearts. They come to need the hauntings, which is exactly what these spirits want. They are merciless when it comes to crushing rivals.
The ones that decide to guard a place become hostile and cruel, not allowing anyone to enter until they have proven themselves harmless. These distressed hauntings occasionally work in small groups, rarely form social bonds and prefering to suffer in silence. If a living dragon were to befriend these distressed hauntings, they would be trapped in the location they guard.
Distressed hauntings have little memory of their former lives, and that can often cause trouble for them. When asked to try and remember what their life was like they can experience great pain, and will most likely lash out to try and make it stop. If a distressed haunting were to remember the full extend of their life, they would pass on onto the afterlife, whether they achieved their original goal or not.
Examples of distressed hauntings:
-this subspecies is based on a personal inteprentation of the Dutch myth of 'witte wieven' (white women). The following bit was taken from Wikipedia, describing the character of these feminine ghosts:
'At first, early medieval literature described the witte wieven more like pranksters and pests. Later Christian teaching transformed the idea of a "witte wieven" into mistflarden: ghost witches— recharacterized as evil and to be avoided.'
The Dutch themselves believed witte wieven to guard swamps and such, either luring people in to drown them or doing anything in their power to keep them out.
