I've been doing a legacy challenge founded by the shadow egg I found during the big light/shadow battle back in August. Until now, I've been posting the dragons involved in the Light flight's massive Legacy Challenge thread, but now I've decided to post them here also so my friends and family in other flights can see them. Shadow Founder: Found by a young wildclaw during battle week. Her finder was feeling jealous of other wildclaws in the lair (who were finally laying eggs for the first time) and basically said of whatever nest lost the egg, "Their loss. Mine now." Being raised by a wildclaw may have done some funny things to the little fae's head; she has an obsession with seeing her legacy become a wildclaw family like her adoptive mother.

Generation 1: These are my founders: Shadowsloss, Founder: Oilslick, Consort: As I said above, Shadowsloss was found by a young wildclaw during battle week. Being raised by a wildclaw may have done some funny things to the little fae's head; she has an obsession with seeing her legacy become a wildclaw family like her adoptive mother, BrightTalon. When the matriarch gave BrightTalon permission to seek an appropriate mate for Shadowsloss, she went to the crossroads market and auction - the hope and dread of every clan’s “extra” hatchlings. BrightTalon herself had come to the clan through the crossroads market, and had great sympathy for the hatchlings there. Perhaps that is why she came back with two of them - one pearlcatcher and one wildclaw. Despite Shadowsloss's preference for wildclaws, she eventually took the pearlcatcher as her mate - mainly through impatience, but his story doesn't end there. In the meantime, however, the Shadowsloss laid two fine eggs. To the delight of the clan breeders, the eldest hatched out a pearlcather like her father: Her younger sister went off with their father to join in a major dominance battle. Lightsgain settled in uncontested as heir to the line, and promptly set to work capturing the heart of the young wildclaw her mother had set aside, a move that finally inspired the elders to grant him a clan-name. With no small sense of irony, Shadowsloss gave him the traditional consort’s garb of a simple darksteel necklace and dusky peacekeeping headband after all. They laid two eggs together, but unfortunately, neither were lucky enough even to gain a visible hide-pattern gene, much less their father's breed. The eldest was simply declared heir again, and the younger went into training. His exasperated elders finally sent his sister off to clan Tagradu’s lair to give the pair a chance to grow up - in more than one sense! The brood mistress went out with BrightTalon and found Shadowbox a wildclaw lady for his mate, some weeks his elder but still young enough to be found nameless in her parents’ lair. This time, the consort was dappled rather than shimmering, with brightwing colors but a dark underbelly giving homage with her eyes to her shadow origins. BrightTalon was tempted to name her “Lavender” after the sun-loving plant she somewhat resembled, but Shadowsloss and Shadowbox agreed that it just wasn’t the right name for a shadow dragon, and finally Lightsgain proposed a compromise - a botanical name that didn’t sound too bright for a shadow-born dragon or too weak for a wildclaw huntress: ShadeHardy. Unlike previous consorts, ShadeHardy made friends in the clan, and a good impression on the clan leadership. While she nonetheless joined in the then-ongoing initiative to train high level warriors for the expected battle, the elders quietly shifted Shadowbox himself into the battle training regime, while easing ShadeHardy into a more permanent spot in the clan. They laid a fine nest of three eggs together, but again, all the hatchlings were pearlcatchers. The broodmistress assured them that while disappointing, it was only to be expected. Like their father and aunt, the first two hatchlings were similar to each other in appearance, and very competitive. When the broodmistress discovered that the middle hatchling, besides being the only male, actually had an underbelly gene which merely happened to exhibit the same color as his primary, he staged a bit of a coup and took over control of the line for his generation. Both of his sisters joined their aunt in battle training. The broodmistress and Shadowsloss were still in agreement that a wildclaw would be best, but no compatible wildclaw was to be found. After weeks of fruitless searching, they finally settled on a striking young imperial instead. Unusually enough, she already had a name from her bith clan: Hayden. Hayden and Neon laid three eggs in the midst of preparations for a massive battle. Hatching was somewhat delayed as the clan's trainers (including Shadehardy) joined the massive push to send out more warriors than the other four flights involved in the conflict. A number of older members of the line joined the battle. Neon and Hayden were finally given permission to hatch the nest during the victory celebration when Light successfully overcame the great battle, and all the hatchlings boasted at least one gene. However, the eldest was single-gened (and perhaps overbright to her ancestors' eyes) while the youngest boasted both underbelly and current wings (and a more line-appropriate coloration). Once again, the line experienced a coup attempt, and once again, the challenger was victorious. The heir was given an astronomical name, "Aphelion," after the point in a solar orbit where the sun is most distant. His sisters were then given matching names, "Perihelion" for the eldest (the closest point to the sun, in honor of her brighter colors) and "Periselene" (the closest point in a lunar orbit, in honor of her more subtle colors). The search was simplified in part by the freedom to choose a shimmer-winged female, but luck played its role: a beautiful shadow lady was right there in the most obvious place when the search began, her clan did not demand an unreasonable price, and her primary gene was simple enough for a hope it would be passed on. Her birth-clan had not yet named her, so she was named "Umbra" after the shadow of an eclipse, in keeping with the astronomical theme of her mate's clutch. The pair laid two eggs, both of which hatched out female imperials. The eldest was far more beautiful than the younger, in part because she had an additional gene, precluding any chance of a coup. They received synonymous names: the heiress Gloaming, and the spare Dusk. In the end, however, it took over 4 months for them to breed and hatch their nest. On the up side, part of this was due to the unexpected boon of a full 5-egg nest! Making space for that many hatchlings to arrive at once proved unexpectedly challenging. To everyone's relief, the new heir returned to current-patterned wings, leaving behind the much maligned eye spots. Shadowsloss was somewhat disappointed that he didn't inherit his father's obsidian coloration, but despite the greenish tinge to his tertiary most of the clan feels that this approach to double coloration will be quite a benefit to the line. In the end, it was Eclipse who talked her down, which didn't quite sit right with some of the line elders. With such thin justification for a coup in the first place, however, they found that once it lost momentum there was no recovering, and PartSun dug in and solidified his rightful place as heir to the line. Fortunately, the heiress came out more beautiful than her father. While the pink underbelly was considered unfortunate by some, others felt that it was still an improvement over her father's sickly yellow, and her speckled obsidian scales were also much admired. Partsun, Heir: 15928785.png and Campfire, consort: 16045238.png

Campfire's choice as a consort for the line was considered a bit controversial because of her bright white underbelly; her standing was by no means improved when she proceeded to lay only a single egg. Fortunately, the heiress came out more beautiful than her father. While the pink underbelly was considered unfortunate by some, others felt that it was still an improvement over her father's sickly yellow, and her speckled obsidian scales were also much admired.

The heiress was name Penumbra. Her father went off to serve the Lightweaver as members of the line so often do during larger battles, and Campfire quietly settled into the back of the lair and tried to make herself too useful to exalt.
