The Hewn Shade Nuzlocke

Welcome to my humble little challenge. Being a sentimental wimp, I will be using Tar's Pinkerton's Plundered Nuzlocke rules. All dragons before Parzell in my Clan are considered dead in this story since I can't bear to get rid of them in any way. (Also, I host nests, so they may not be mine in the first place!)

The Most Important Rule:
Any dragon that faints in the coliseum is considered dead and will be exalted. Additionally, any eggs that hatch have a 50% chance of being duds - the hatchlings will be exalted.

Drop Rules:
Food:
Three dragons will be chosen at random to fight in the venue one step down from the highest dragon's level. A plant item means ten battles, insect is twenty battles, seafood is thirty battles, and meat is forty battles. No other coliseum work outside of this.
Material:
A journal entry will be completed by one of the members of the remaining clan detailing the activity of the day or past few days, depending on drops.
Trinket:
A piece of art will be created to either represent the day, past few days, a specific event, or a profile piece.
Familiar:
The cheapest dragon on the AH will be purchased and added to the surviving clan. A random number generator will be used to determine the breed of the dragon.
Apparel:
Breed two dragons. This may or may not be randomized, depending on how the story develops. If no pairs are off cooldown, then two dragons from the rest of the clan will be chosen - their eggs will be "found" by the surviving clan.
Battle Item:
Begin death streak: three random dragons, venue based on highest leveled dragon, ten consecutive battles with no fleeing or resetting unless a dragon dies.

Additional Rules:
--All found eggs will have a 50% survival rate - those that do not survive are sent to the auction house for lots of moolah.
--I reserve the right to use my nests for 1) nest rentals and 2) existing breeding projects. These eggs are not restricted by the survival rate.
The Hewn City A ruined, skeletal landscape of shattered structures, gripped by a shade that boggles even the Light dragonflight's most studious archaeologists. In this broken city lay secrets that are too mysterious to unearth, and even the bravest dragons are given pause when approaching its haunted outskirts.
The term "shade" for the murk that surrounded the Hewn City had been used loosely. Many knew the name of the consuming darkness that had nearly destroyed Sornieth twice, but as the years have gone by, as the philosophers discussed past and present, it was thought that the Shade had been destroyed when it had shattered the Pillar of the World. After all, the Lightweaver's shard, kept safe in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye, was proof enough of the destruction that happened long before any dragon first breathed under the goddess' sun. Brave dragons delved into the ruins for information on their builders and why a shadow seemed to cling so tightly to the Light's Domain. Braver dragons built their lairs within the ruins, using the buildings to their advantage and giving them easy access to whatever secrets they may find. A Guardian named Jeverinth used the stones on the outskirts of the city to build a great library and garrison, training both seekers of knowledge and might. The Harbinger of Truth, she was called, embodying the very foundation of the Light in seeking truth and information in any form. She also knew, however, that this information needed to be protected by those that would see it destroyed. In the twilight they dwelled, scribbling notes, discussing ideas, training tooth and claw. None of this, however, would prepare them for the darkest night. The ground itself seemed to swell as the shadows grew thicker to the point where even the largest light source was snuffed out. Some hid; others raced to find something, anything to end this chaos. Their greatest sorcerers worked to invoke the very Lightweaver herself to banish this darkness, but their efforts, too, were consumed. What happened afterwards remains a mystery. There are too many questions and not enough answers. Just a scant few dragons clinging to life, fighting for survival as they fight for the Truth.

The Lightweaver's Shadow
I think she's done it. I think the Lightweaver went through on her quest to try to eradicate the Imperial race.

But if that were the case, why am I still here?

My name is Parzell. My father is Bogart, leader of the Clan of Heart's Blood Cavern, my home nest. He had warned me that the Sunbeam Ruins could be dangerous after the Lightweaver's declaration. I ignored him.

I'm not alone in this darkness. I've found two other survivors huddled near the nesting grounds of the Harbinger's Clan, plus the abandoned eggs of some unfortunate couple. As far as the lot of us can tell, the rest of the Clan has been wiped out. We are hiding in the nook created for the parents of the nest, trying our best to figure this out.

Corona claims to have no knowledge of the problem. I don't know if I believe her; her mother had been an enemy of Imperials long before I was hatched. Surely the Pearlcatcher has some knowledge of this shadow that has consumed us.

Kierce was among the shards of his egg when we found him, so I don't expect him to have any knowledge. He cried for his mother and father, but got no answer. I can only assume the leaders of the doomed clan are dead or have abandoned us.

Life these past few days have been a struggle, with shadow monsters and the local fauna attacking at any time of the day or night - whether it is one or the other is unknown - and keeping us from finding any respite from this chaos.

We will give these eggs a few more days to hatch or lose their Light. Then I plan to find some answers.

Light Flight in the Darkness
Corona's Journal
It's been five days since the darkness came, and none of us are closer to the answers we seek. The shadows are oppressive; it feels like they're some giant weight crushing us. No matter what I try, I can't get it to dissipate. I've tried all Light magic my mother taught me, and they seem cursed to fail. There is a glow, but it doesn't pierce the darkness.

Parzell still doesn't trust me. I have done nothing wrong, but he seems to think I did something to harm him. We are alive, aren't we? I don't think he'll believe me that a Pearlcatcher didn't cause this until the shadows consume me.

What a terrible thought.

Kierce has been a very adept pupil and I've been teaching him the basics of combat magic. There's too much at stake not to, especially with every creature seeming to want to destroy us.

One thing I've noticed - there's no light in their eyes. Not the Light of our domain, and not the light of life. Are they undead? Some cruel magic here like that which makes Emperors?

And Parzell thinks I'm the enemy.

I'm worried about the eggs. They're too dull. I fear for the hatchlings within, but what can I do?

How do I summarize the past few days? Chaos, I suppose.

The eggs we were guarding finally hatched; at least, two of them did, while the other three lost their Light. Cupric and Ferric are the new members of our little group, two brothers that I'm afraid will never see the light of a new dawn. Not with this murk constantly around us.

Kierce... Oh, Kierce. He's gone. We buried him with the eggs that didn't hatch. Why did he have to do such a stupid thing as take on a Janustrap without backup? We all knew of the second nest he had found and were going to relocate as soon as Cupric and Ferric found their feet.

Parzell found him, desperately shooting off all the Light he could while being strangled by the roots of the Janustrap. By the time he got there, it was too late. The roots had sapped too much from the little Fae. Now...

Now I am alone with Parzell and four hatchlings that will never know their parents. We named the two Faes from the second nest Circe and Kaya, after Kierce. They're weak, but alive, and that's what matters. As soon as we can, we're leaving the nesting grounds. I pray to the Lightweaver that she'll forgive us for any other eggs we could have saved...

Regrets
Parzell's Journal
Corona and I got into yet another argument. She's so stubborn! She was stubborn, at least.

We couldn't decide what to do. We couldn't agree on what to do. Corona wanted to head east, towards the Beacon of the Radiant Eye. I want nothing more to do with the Lightweaver, and so the true course should be heading northwest back to Dragonhome. We fought for an hour until one of the Faes cried out for food.

We left the growing hatchlings in a safe nook amongst the ruins and set out to hunt and forage. With hatchlings to feed, we have no choice but to delve into this inky murk. At least it's one thing Corona and I could agree on.

It was a basilisk that attacked us. A monstrous creature, bigger than it ought to be by half. I don't know if it saw us as prey or felt we were a danger or... who knows. All I know is that in the flurry of battle, I was grievously wounded. It was so strange, knowing I was about to die.

But then I was surrounded by warm, soothing Light. Corona was between me and the basilisk, channeling her power into me to heal me.

Then the basilisk took her down.

It did not live long after that.

The last thing I said to her was scathing, angry. And yet Corona gave her life for me.

What a fool I am.
