Cruel and cold like winds on the sea
Will you ever return to me?
Hear my voice, sing with the tide
My love will never die
Over waves and deep in the blue
I will give up my heart for you
Ten long years, I’ll wait to go by
My love will never die

Come, my love be one with the sea
Rule with me for eternity
Drown all dreams so mercilessly
And leave their souls to me
Play the song you sang long ago
And wherever the storm may blow
You will find the key to my heart
We’ll never be apart
Wild and strong you can’t be contained
Never bound nor ever chained
Wounds you caused will never mend
And you will never end

Cruel and cold like winds on the sea
Will you ever return to me
Hear my voice sing with the tide
Our love will never die

(Taken from Tore's Bio - Astrid has been exalted as a warrior of the Tidecaller.)
Astrids Lore: Astrid never much cared because her blood was diluted. She knew what it was like to be frowned down upon and how the others don't look at her quite the same way. She didnt care about that for herself. But she cared about it for her children. She met Valerian as a hatchling upon the ice floes, the ship she was on was being guided by Ase and Astrid had been taken in by the elder female. Having been stranded, Valerian was taken under the matriarchs wing as well and he formed a strong bond with Astrid.

Astrid told Val of her struggles, of growing up under the harsh tutelage of her foster mother and he vowed not to let that happen to their children. They settled within the realm of the Tidelord and shortly after they had a single precious egg, their firstborn, their long-awaited son. And he was beautiful, Astrid was immediately smitten with the hatchling. He was as dark as the sea during a storm and Astrid named him Tore.

Her boy grew, he was an only child, and she pushed him, even allowing her foster mother to further his education -- as a daughter of Ragnar and Lorelai she was best able to help him.

He flourished and grew and took a mate for a time to give Astrid her first grandchildren. She too loved them but they were unpure, like her, and she secretly despised it. She had worked hard to bring purity to their bloodline and her sons first lover had proven to be a failure. The boy, her grandson, captured her eye. He was like her, while his sister was more like Tore.

Astrid's mate, Valerian chose to return to the Tidelord shortly after their second clutch of eggs -- all daughters, all beautiful. They were similar in color to their elder brother, but the sea caught in Cascade's tones and Astrid loved that.

Now, Astrid's thoughts stray to her mate, now that her children are grown and she would bear no others.

Ilsa's Lore: While first among her clutch to hatch, she was never the most beloved. Her mother's attention, when not on her elder brother Tore, was on Cascade's training. Caught between an older brother who's force of personality and eagerness to prove himself the best drove her to play "catch up", and a mother's love that was dedicated to her younger sisters and elder brother, Isla felt incomplete. Middle child, she strove for the affection and attention of her family only to be over-shadowed time and again. This drove her to ever more dangerous and risky behaviors during her training.

Her ferocity matched her brothers. Her dedication to purity mirrored her mother's. Her adherence to the ways of the Dirge filled her heart with pride, and she embraced the call of the Sirens with all her ability and power. Yet she wanted more to fill in the void growing in her soul. Eventually, fed up with the constant struggle for acknowledgment, she left her family to find her own way.

After several days flight, she was captured by a band of warriors devoted to empowering the Gladekeeper in her fight for Dominance. They gave her a choice, stay, train, and go to the Gladekeeper or leave. Bound to the Tidecaller, this seemed like a terrible idea. However their ferocity reminded her of her brother's power. There was something here, she sense, something just as dedicated and just as powerful as the Dirge. Something stirred within her heart and she smiled. Here she could, once and for all, prove herself worth as a child of Ragnar and Lorelli.

So, she gave them another choice, "Train me in your ways and I will fight with you clan, and bring more dragons into the Gladekeeper's fold." Shocked by this offer, they discussed it. A powerful mirror of the Tidelord's own stepped up and demanded attention. Hydrangea, while named for a soft beautiful flowering bush was anything but soft and flowery. She stalked up towards the young Isla and rose up to look her in the eyes.

"I see the Tidelord in your soul, but there is more here. You ask us to make you of our clan, but you would be land-bound. How do you feel about that?" Hydrangea growled.

"It would be temporary, as your lands touch the water. Once I am trained I will take the fight to your weakest border and protect it from our enemies." Isla purred in return.

The mirror considered this, and turned to the elders of the clan. "She has my support. I will speak to the other trainers of the Battleborn." But before she left, she turned once more to the Skydancer. "You look much like a young Skydancer that was brought to us recently by our Shadowlands representative." Hydrangea commented. "Will this be an issue?"

Startled by this revelation, she bristled. Her hope faded slightly, maybe here was not the place she would make her mark and prove to her kin that she was as powerful a Siren as any other. "Who is it?"

Another Skydancer approached and bristled at the sight of her. The two stared each other down for a long while, until the younger one spoke. "I am Sjelkart, daughter of Divavasu and Tove, granddaughter of Capse and Aleta, great-granddaughter of Asgard and Sif, who was fourth-hatched of Ragnar and Lorelei."

"Ah, you are of Sif's line? So am I." Isla commented. "We are close cousins. I am of Sif's elder son Calder's line, 3rd hatched. Daughter of Valerian and Astrid. What brings you here, cousin?"

The rest of the clan watched the two Dirge-born carefully weighing their options. Was this a good omen, or a bad one? The tension in the air around the two skydancers rose and several of the clan shifted their stances ready to defend their home.

Ophelia watched the entire thing from behind the younger skydancer. She quietly slunk away.

"I have been offered a ship here," Sjelkart's crest rose in defiance. Isla's rose in agitation. The pride and hubris of the young Dirge Siren set Isla off.

"Males of our lines are Captains." She snarled. "You are a Siren-born. Pure of blood and soul."

"I see no male here," Sjelkart sniffed and glanced around at the rest of the clan who watched them with a wary cautiousness. "I also see no need to stay land bound. The offer was given and accepted, with your permission or not."

"Impudence." Isla snapped. "Do you dare dishonor our blood?"

"Do you want to remain here, tied to the land, with no ship beneath our claws?" Sjelkart retorted.

Isla snorted, but it was a truth she could not deny. The dirt under her claws itched, and she ached to feel the movement of the water under her. It had only been a few days, but even that was too much. "What ship?" Her question was cautious and her eyes narrowed in suspicion.

Sjelkart's crest lowered, looking less than pleased. "A cargo ship."

"What?!" Isla nearly swatted the younger dragon. Only the least capable, or the least ambitious would dare to pilot a cargo ship. It was too much, and she stalked up towards the younger skydancer. To her surprise, the other did not back down. Instead she bristled, ready for a fight. Maybe the purity of her blood was true, for her heart and soul displayed here was fierce and full of pride.

Sjelkart snarled back. "With or without you, I will sail. Will you join me? Aunt?"

Startled by the honorific, Isla blinked and sat on her haunches. Her tail curled around her legs as her wings folded neatly along her back. "You would have me?"

The other skydancer sighed, lowering her crest. "Any of the Dirge is welcome on my ship, as long as they can accept me as it's captain." Ilsa considered this for several moments, and finally relented. While it made her uncomfortable, the truth was she belongs to the waves.

"I will be your ship's elder Siren, Sjelkart. For now."

The clan around them breathed a collective sigh, and the mirror smiled. "We are strengthened by the children of the Dirge." Hydrangea glanced towards the elders who nodded their heads. "We accept your petition to live among us." She added as she looked back towards the skydancers before her.

"Welcome to the Battleborn Clan."

While there were times she did not see eye to eye with the upstart Sjelkart, she admitted to herself that the younger skydancer was a good leader. The cargo ship's travels were short and efficient. When they had time in between runs, Sjelkart would set out and anchor them off the coast, just far enough so the land vanished beneath the horizon.

Here they swam, hunted, and embraced their nature as one of Tidecaller's own. At these times, they would talk, share their experiences, laugh, and sometime argue. Sjelkart was bound to be a Valkyrie, and while it irked Isla, she also couldn't deny the bone markings on the younger skydancer's hide. At these times she'd touch the outline of bones on her own hide and wonder if she was following the wrong path herself, or not.

A few months of this travel, and she could see the ache for battle in the younger skydancer's eyes. It was especially powerful when they took the clan's warriors out to other distant shores and bring back their battle-won haul. Isla offered to teach her, and train her siren skills, but Sjelkart more often than not refused. Without recourse or the backing of other family, Isla watched her cousin suffer, until she approached the Captain of the Guard during a period of repairs at the dry dock.

"We've been here long enough, and while we offer our services to the clan, I have yet to upkeep my own promise to your elders. When will we train?" Isla asked Drakenvulf. The gray wildclaw was silent for a moment before she resettled her wings along her back.

"We are gearing up for a major feast in honor of the Glademother. Now is not a good time." Drakenvulf said. Isla's feathers sagged against her head and neck. "But I will see if any of the trainers can take you along, if you so wish it."

With that Isla perked up and dipped her head in gratitude. "Thank you."

When Drakenvulf returned later that day to the docks, Isla learned quickly that the training they were to receive was more martial than magical. At first she balked, unsure of what she should do. But after a brief discussion with the Captain of the Guard, she learned of the variety of fighters, both martial and magic.

"Many of our warriors choose a venue they are best suited, and practice the skills needed to ensure their success. We also have healers and battle mages that go with our best to the Golem Workshop. You know your own heart, children of the Dirge." Drakenvulf motioned to the waters beyond the dry dock, "You know the path that calls to you."

"So not all of your people are fighters?" Isla asked.

"No, some are gatherers, and others are crafters. We have an alchemist in training, and you know Baylie, our tradesdragon. We all fight, but our fight comes in different forms." Drakenvulf chuckled. "You know this."

Frustrated at being misunderstood, Isla snorted. "I meant, that of your warriors, some use magic more than their physical skills. I thought the areas beyond the clan territories were too dangerous, even for mages."

"Ah, no. Again, we all fight in our own ways, and Arabella is our best battle mage." Drakenvulf dipped her head in apology. "I can ask if she would teach you the ways of our best magical fighters?"

Isla considered this before answering, "Yes. I would like to learn how your people of the land fight using magic."
