"A king is no one without his followers."

"Welcome to the Clan of the Crystal Nook, I am Hydra, the king, and number six in the Council of Elders. As you learn more about us, you'll find that our clan values Aura, an invisible energy that covers every one of us. Some have more than others, and that was the deciding factor of who is leader. You may remember me as a basic Guardian, but my handsome new genes were the key to reclaiming power, the lair, and my charge.

Aura, scholarly knowledge, and unabated devotion to the Arcanist and all things Arcane are what we value most. Aura, that magical life force had grown chaotic through the passage of time, but the clan has entered a peaceful renaissance. May you rejoice and be merry during your stay."
Prologue

The Arcanist hadn't long returned to his incessant scribbling of information, before he once again paused. He sighed heavily, then said, "but of course." He waved his scrawny arms around, as if he was harnessing the magic around him. "Another is needed," he said to himself, and finished the mysterious ritual. Without another word, he resumed his paperwork.

Condensed light began to gather in a ball outside in the Starfall Isles. The Auratic energy amassed began to grow in size and shape until it started to take a solid form. A Guardian dragon was created from the energy; it was a male of the Arcane flight. After taking form for the first time, he fell from where he had appeared. He dropped like a boulder through the sky and hit the water with a huge splash. He resurfaced dazed and confused as he paddled in place; he only knew that his name was Hydra, and nothing more... except one small thing. He was a Guardian, and as if he were pre-programmed with the knowledge, he knew that it was his mission to find his charge.

His own Aura told him that it was time to start The Search, so he swam towards the mainland shore, and once there, he dried himself. He remembered nothing before appearing in this land, and he felt deep inside of him that he would find his charge no where else but here. He took to the sky and traversed the area, weaving in and out of the pink, crystalline mountains that scraped the sky. He kept his eyes open for the clue that would help him find his charge, and that's when sudden movement on one of the mountains caught his attention.
The Rise and Fall of King Hydra

A tiny Fae was robotically chipping away at a nook in the cliff face, trying to clear a lair space in the name of the Arcanist. As he approached, he identified her as having an Aura like himself. She had an Unlikely Alliance orbiting her, and he could see that she was putting everything she had into the excavation effort. With each dig her small claws performed, she gave a frustratingly exhausted but determined warcry. "This is it," Hydra thought as he swooped in and perched on the nook behind her. With his great strength and size, he began to carve the nook larger.

"I feel like you're just supposed to be here," said the Fae, watching him with awe.
"I feel like I'm supposed to be here too," Hydra replied, and without stopping his work, he grinned with pride.

Thus, the Fae named Arjibi took to his presence, and as he worked to clear the space in their new dragonmade cave, she constructed the first nest. Together, they founded the Clan of the Crystal Nook, and Hydra knew his charge was one of several things: his queen, the clan, and their territory. They bred a few times and watched their lair grow with their own offspring, with different kinds of dragons possessing a familiar Aura joining them. Little did the founders know that their world would be rocked multiple times - the first of which was when a male Wildclaw named Icytalon joined their clan.

Icytalon had a weak Aura similar to Hydra's, as he challenged him for dominance. At this point, Aura was unimportant and small in the grand scheme of things, so the fight became physical. Hydra did his best to fend off the challenger, but the young Wildclaw's huge talons were enough to drive Hydra back. Hydra had been the co-founder and sole excavator of the cave, and after everything he did for the clan, it was all so easily ripped from him. He felt a stab to his pride as his charge felt threatened. All was not lost, though: as long as he could remain in the lair and oversee the well-being of the clan, he could still protect what he assumed to be his charge.

Queen Arjibi turned her back on Hydra. If he couldn't win in a little fight like this, how could he continue to be king? As she took Icytalon as a mate, Hydra tried to move on as well. He became mates with another Fae who reminded him of the queen, but it wasn't the same. The queen's new mate took so long to help produce eggs to be exalted, that Hydra was able to have dozens of eggs with Darksparkle in that time. Nearly all of Hydra's offspring were exalted. He thought that at least he had that going for him: more offspring exalted than the Wildclaw. Still, the Guardian's pride and confidence slowly deteriorated, starting with this first loss, and would continue over the course of the following years.

But it wasn't long before Hydra witnessed the Wildclaw dethroned from the queen's side with no struggle. At first, Hydra found it amusing. No one may question the queen when she chose a new king, and that was the case when the new and still current king arrived. His Aura was noticeably powerful, and like nothing the clan had ever seen. Hydra watched Icytalon as he moved himself to the lower ranks of the clan, in the same embarrassing way Hydra himself had to. Hydra smirked smugly, but no one could foresee that the biggest change was yet to come.

As the prodigy king grew even stronger, the clan was shell-shocked when he took full control, and dethroned the founding queen. The king took a new queen and Hydra watched in despair as the lair was completely lost to strangers. The current king and queen were born elsewhere, and stole power from the true heirs of the clan. Mass Exaltings took place that took both Darksparkle and Icytalon. Hydra found Arjibi by his side again, fellow founders practically banished to the bottom of the lair. The shame of his failure to keep control of his assumed charge disgusted Hydra, but meeting with Arjibi again was what made him feel complete despite the shameful banishment. What still brought him little peace, was that his only un-exalted son, Circusmonster, still had a high position in the clan. A Guardian like his father, Hydra knew that his son also had a charge, and as a member of the clan's army, Circusmonster would be able to keep it safe.
The Spark of Revolution

Hydra had resigned to living in shame, located in the deepest part of the cave, living with nothing and with nothing to live for. He had his suspicions that he was only kept around for display – for visitors to look at and see that the clan "proudly" keeps around its founding progenitor. If only outsiders knew the truth, about the injustices brought on him and Arjibi. On August 29, 2018, everything would change. He pathetically lay curled up on the floor of his cave room, when several dragons entered, it was the Nox Guard, which Circusmonster was a member of.

"Son!" Hydra gasped and covered his face with his wing. "You must not witness my shame."

"Father," Circusmonster said. He radiated so much honor and pride that Hydra felt as small as an amoeba. "True heroes will always serve the greater good." With that, Circusmonster bowed on his knees.

"Son..." quietly said Hydra in despair. Skywinder, one of the nocturnes stepped forward to speak.

"Some of the dragons in the lair have been secretly forming a rebellion," he started. "We, the Nox Guard, the gamemaster, the treasurer and the alchemist, have all been working tirelessly to acquire the scrolls to raise you and the old queen back up - to breathe life back into you, to make you feel powerful once again." Hydra was speechless and smacked his lips. The Matron of War, Bananabread, graced him.

"With Chessa's earnings, Gilded's secret fund stash, Contagia's brew, and our work on the battlefield, we present to you, your scrolls." Bananabread opened her wings and the scrolls she kept tucked and hidden close to her body fell out and onto the floor in front of Hydra. Hydra rose to his feet and gathered the scrolls, feeling unreal.

"The old queen is already completely changed, you wouldn't even recognize her," Skywinder informed him. "Her Aura is more powerful, and once you use your scrolls, yours will be as well, my king. All of us rebels will soon meet to plan our attack on the false king."

Hydra looked back at his son, who had stood back up and was holding his head high with a smile. "Please go ahead, father."

The Nox Guard watched quietly as Hydra started to unfurl the scrolls that would restore his power. He spoke the magic incantations on each scroll: tertiary, secondary, then primary, and the genes started to become visible on his body as the scrolls turned to dust. Hydra panted in excitement in his new skin; he felt completely revitalized. The prospect of reclaiming his assumed charge and having his life feel once again fulfilled ignited his pride. His eyes met with his son's, and he vowed to take back his honor.

Nearly a week afterwards, the rebels started to make a move. On the day that a newcomer joined their clan, Hydra and Arjibi slowly moved up the ranks, undetected. This new dragon had creepy and bizarre properties that blocked Aura and the detection of it - thus they were able to use her as a shield as they moved closer to the false monarchy. The Nox Guard held position very near to the powerful Faes, and could help harbor the progenitors even closer. Once there, the attack could commence. Ambushing the false king was priority, and they would need Aristheus, the Exalt Expert, to forcibly exalt him and the false queen in order for them to regain control of the clan. Hydra hid behind the Aura blocker and awaited word from the rebels higher up. This was the closest he had been to the top of the lair in years, and he knew it wouldn't be long before he could see the sun again.
Renaissance

September was an eventful month. With the Arcane holiday on the horizon, Hydra especially felt that it was time to reclaim what was his; enough with the waiting! Aristheus was the wrench in their cogs, the reason they were waiting - an exposed coward, fearfully refusing to defy the false royalty. After a rough coercion, Aristheus was thrust into the grand court of the king and queen. It was a huge, well-lit cavern, and at the back were the thrones where the faes lazed. It wasn't out of the ordinary for Aristheus to be in the room with them, as he was utilized as an advisor and informant, and so there was no suspicion.

"Aristheus, I didn't feel you arrive," the king said plainly. He didn't know it, but he was referring to the moment Aristheus passed the Aura-Blocker and his Aura became visible again.
"My king." Aristheus squeaked, feeling small. He was on the floor, and walked on all fours towards his fellow faes. "May I have a word with you?"

Outside, all that the rebels could do was wait, and hope that Aristheus would succeed in his exalting of the king. Standing before the monarchy, Aristheus reached to his side and thumbed through his books that rested at his side - quietly passing over general logkeeping, and taking his Book of Exalting. He hesitated with his hand gripping it, before he launched the attack.

Aristheus sprung towards the king in a powerful leap, tackling and knocking him out of his throne. In the scuffle, the king's crown clattered across the cavern and Aristheus used his whole body weight to keep him subdued as the king's violent Aura flared like an explosion. The Aura made Aristheus feel like death incarnate but he held him down. The queen was actually powerless and relied on the king, so her fight-or-flight kicked in, and she took flight. Hearing the commotion and knowing the final act was in play, the Nox Guard stormed the room, cutting off the queen from the exit.

"Guards! Aristheus is a traitor!" The king screeched, but the Nox Guard stood firmly at the door. Realizing that a coup was taking place, the king suddenly and eerily calmed, and his Aura receded to an unfeeling state. The cavern was silent apart from Aristheus' panicked breaths and the queens small footsteps as she darted back and forth like a trapped beast.

"Then, may The Shade curse you all," were the king's final words, as Aristheus began to read the incantation aloud from his book. The King was then exalted, leaving behind his belongings. The queen could do nothing as Aristheus exalted her, and as she disappeared to serve a higher cause, her crown lay on the floor where she once had been.

Aristheus collapsed on the floor in an anxious heap as the Nox Guard left to break the news to the clan. "The false monarchy has been exalted," the declaration rang out for the whole clan to hear. Hydra was swelling with pride as his assumed charge was once again in his control. He looked at Arjibi, and as their eyes met, his heart nearly stopped. It was then and there he realized that he had assumed his charge was their entire territory, the clan, and what it stood for, but as he looked into his mate's pink eyes, he finally understood that she was his charge. It was she that he had first been drawn to, that he found among all the pink mountains and the rest of the world; it was she who founded the clan alongside him that he stayed for. As their wordless exchange of gazes lingered over a few moments, they both knew that their renaissance had started, then together, they walked the corridors to the cave's mouth. Having been used to the darkness and ambient light of torches, the sunlight was painful, but at the same time, too beautiful for words. And so, the pair stood in silence as they looked out into the Starfall Isles; the water sparkled, the crystal mountains glistened, and birds could be seen flying against the yellow sky as the progenitors recalled their humble beginnings.
. . .

As the clan celebrated the return of their benevolent leaders, Hydra and Arjibi took their place at the top of the lair once more. The Starfall Celebration coincided with the Crystal Nook's personal celebration, and the entire clan was filled to the brim with pride and joy. The monarchs took to the nesting ground for the first time in years, and their clutch was hatched during the holiday. While the others fulfilled their duty being exalted, the pair decided to keep the firstborn of this clutch. She was named Starlight, and her birth and presence in the clan was a physical reminder of everything they had went through. Starlight was the dawning of a new age as the clan thrived.

And thrive it did: with the false monarchy gone, the clan's motivation and morale was bolstered. The gamemaster began to earn maximum treasure at an accelerated rate, all of which could finally be used for the benefit of every dragon in the lair. The bountiful daily treasure jump-started the clan's inner-economy and the lair was more active than ever as they prospered and revitalized more members with genes. Dragons acquired jobs, became well-dressed and expanded their territory as the future of the lair was now monetarily secured. It was well and truly a renaissance.
