Kyrith and Irvine from Catkinstarchild
In the low light of the Tangled Wood, a flash of color and a burst of heat could be anything. Most dragons know the tales of wisps, after all, the beings that lead unwary travelers to their fortune or their doom depending on their mood. There is a global familiarity, too, with the masters of illusion who pay homage to the Shadowbinder in the heart of her domain, creating magical tricks designed to humiliate and sometimes even rob the unwary. Those twisted brambles are not a safe place in the shadows, but in the light, it is ever more likely that something is wrong.
But the liminal space between light and dark, the moment when the sky burns orange but the inky dark washes over the land, is unique in that it is either intensely perilous or perfectly safe. It is a time of high magic, a time to work spells that cannot be done by the sun or moon alone, a time for miracles and catastrophes alike.
Kyrith loves it.
It sings to his trickster's soul, the last moments of sunshine, the first minutes of full shadow. He thrives when the sky burns with hazy light and the earth recedes into the dark to await the glow of the moon. It is the best time for fool's magic, after all, magic that enchants the senses and creates something altogether ethereal.
There's no purpose to his spells, not yet. There is only a sense of fierce pride when his illusions flare to life in the dying light, and a sense of glee when they take on minds of their own, racing through the Tangled Wood to trouble some poor soul until their magic burns out and they fade away. They are ephemeral, inclined toward mischief, relentless and boundless.
Kyrith does not know what he would do without them, does not know who he would be. He just knows they are his, these twilight mirages, born of his magic, tied to his will, and for that, he has nothing but love and pride.
