Imperial Strategist

esgSbzL.png

“Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.”

3GJ3dLt.png

...... From high up the castle battlements, he surveys the approaching enemy. A band covers his eyes but all the citizens of Aeos know of him, or at least, what the legends whisper about him. And it is said that blind though he may be, the imperial strategist sees with an arcane power granted to him by the Stormcatcher, himself.

......He counts half a dozen warships, each bearing the sigil of five coiled serpents, the symbol of a rival royal clan. Tensions had steadily risen the last few years between the two clans. What started out as a simple trade misunderstanding bred suspicion and distrust, finally culminating in a declaration of war.

......Though dragons could fly, they couldn't do so over long stretches of ocean. Not only would the effort exhaust them, but there would be no place to land so they could rest up. And for the enemy, there was no other option to reach the city of Aeos, except by sea. Unless, of course, they plan to scale the craggy mountains of the Earthshaker's Spine.

afBkejs.png

......Aeos was primarily a seaside kingdom, bordered all around by the peaks of the Spine where it wasn't facing the open ocean. Only it's own citizens were aware of the secret passes and trails used to transfer food and supplies by land. Naturally fortified and highly defensible.

......His vast information network kept him abreast of all important activity, of course, and he'd known about the coming attack for weeks now.

......He'd expected them two days earlier actually.

......Extra time is always a bonus and Tethrax, more than any other dragon, is the epitome of practicality, precision and efficiency. Additional preparations were made, the city swept twice over for any remaining citizens left out by the evacuation, and more weapons procured just yesterday. Escape routes, medical necessities, food stores, even fire containment, should it occur, were all meticulously prepared for.

......His gaze falls to the docks, where Cassian, the War Master, is eagerly waiting with his battalion. He is 98% certain the battle will start there, and that piece of information is all the battle-hardened bogsneak needs to station his men near the harbor.

......The other two percent probability, he leaves to the Starless Sorceress. Should the enemy choose to engage them in aerial combat first, even before reaching the harbor, Yula and her mages had greater range and flexibility in the air. Besides, magic is a hazard and it is always best to try and steer spell battles over water to avoid damaging the city as much as possible.

......All other military factions were scattered in strategic points across Aeos, waiting for his signal. Tethrax, himself, will not lead a group, but will be coordinating the defense as a whole. It falls to him to make snap decisions as the battle progresses. By his estimation, everything should be going according to —

......"Empress, please!"

......Or not. And that happened to be his liege, the strong-willed Empress, who is currently flying towards him in her full valkyrie regalia instead of the usual flowing gowns. Her handmaiden, Shiri, followed close at her heels.

......"I'm sorry, my lord. I tried to stop her." Shiri apologizes.

......"I'm sure you couldn't." He replies dryly, turning away from the scene below to regard them both.

......Eyes blazing, the normally mild-mannered Eris glares at her master tactician. "I am Empress. You do not give me commands, Tethrax! I will not hide like some hatchling behind his mother's skirts! You know better than anyone that I can fight and that is exactly what I'll do."

......She is among the few people in the clan who do not fear him. He thinks it's actually a drawback in this case. But he wouldn't be the imperial strategist if he hadn't seen this coming. Completely ignoring her, the strategist addresses her handmaiden, instead.

......"Shiri."

......"Yes, sire?"

......"Go find Aion. Tell him he is to protect the Empress with his life. He is to never let her out of his sight."

......The handmaiden looks confused for a moment. But it is as though he can read her mind.

......"It is the job of the Captain of the First Guard, namely Riordan, to guard her but knowing the Empress, it is likely she will attempt to give him the slip. Having Aion there as well will reassure me, at least."

......Always one step ahead, that was Tethrax. Shiri nods. "At once, my lord."

......"Wait, WHAT?! Come back here, Shiri!" The Empress stares irately at the quickly-retreating form of her traitorous handmaiden. But it was too late. He's already won this round and they both knew it. He's known Eris far longer than anyone, even before she became Empress, and it was not uncommon to see them disagreeing over one thing or another. Everyone also knows that he is her most trusted adviser and that he owes her his life. Their adventures of old are the stuff of legends and proudly spread by the inhabitants of Aeos.

......"If you must fight, I will not take any unnecessary risks with your safety. Aion and Riordan will protect you, and that is the only compromise I will make." He states flatly. Aion, a fellow imperial and a former pirate, is another of their oldest friends and a master swordsman.

......Deep down, she knows he is truly concerned and finally relents, her anger dissipating. "Aion will do nothing but flirt with me, you know." Eris says with a roll of her emerald eyes.

......"He enjoys charming anything female."

......"Why, Tethrax, do I detect a note of envy? Are you jealous you're not the center of attention when he's in the room?"

......The strategist snorts. "Hardly. I have no time nor interest in such frivolities."

......"Maybe if you did, you'd loosen up a bit."

......He raises a single eyebrow. "You know why."

......That single sentence effectively silences her. A long time ago, the day they met, she rescued him from the clutches of a demon, one who took possession of his body and mind, made him do things that still give him nightmares. And even after regaining himself, the demon's madness resurfaces from time to time, prompting Tethrax to fight for dominance in his own mind. Ever since that day, he swore a life debt to her, to protect her and her kingdom. As far as he was concerned, she owned him. She had his complete, utter loyalty, whether she wanted it or not.

......The demon's madness is the reason he refuses to get close to anyone. The fear that he will one day lose control and harm someone important is far, far stronger than his loneliness. It had already happened once before, with his parents. He'd kill himself before he'd let it happen again.

......No use reminiscing the past. They had a battle in their hands. Tethrax glances back at the approaching warships and deduces they had about an hour left. Spreading his majestic wings, the imperial strategist prepares to take flight.

......"Let's go defend your kingdom, Empress."

So let's take a look at your lovely lad. Right off the bat, I am almost getting Hijikata from Hakuoki vibes but I think that is mostly due to that wonderful piece of art featuring Tethrax with the Sakura blossoms. I also say almost because Tethrax is very well established as an intelligent strategist. What I like the most about this lore is the theme. It is the very classic "calm before the storm" that is known to occur before battle. This is a great time for characters to reminisce and reflect upon themselves or each other. I say it is an excellent move on your part to introduce so much and explain the world that is around Tethrax.

Anyway, on the whole, I am impressed with your work. You've done a commendable job considering that English isn't your first language. I enjoyed reading this lore. Thank you so much for your kindness and for introducing me to Tethrax. I hope you found my review helpful.

So now that I'd read Ysanne's lore, I was intrigued and wanted to know more about Tethrax. My first impression was something along the lines of "Oh wow, that is one beautiful dragon. Amazing colours." And then I started reading. And I think...the only thing that transcends his appearance is the wonderful way you've written your lore and built up the intricacies of their world. I just had to take a quick skim-read of Eris, Aion, and Tamika's lore too. And of course, I continue to love your worldbuilding. But back to Tethrax - I just adore your choice of outfit for him. It's just a little understated and gives him personality enough that you can just tell there's something interesting and possibly dangerous about this individual. So yeah, he's gorgeous and extremely well written, what's not to like?

oh, he is so good! He's so pretty and all his art is beyond amazing

Yeah, your lore is dope! Love the kingdom, it has a very high fantasy feel, I adore. The fact that its written like a story is also just really nice :D

Here is Tethrax! I have to say, man, this dude was fun to draw. I love imperials. That's also quite an accent he's got - I tried to get as much of it in there as I could. As such, I sure hope this lives up to your standards!
