Brygid, the Matriarch
Art by Macabrecabra
Welcome, dear traveler, to Clan Safe Haven!
This clan is protected by a Guardian Matriarch, whose ward is the entire clan, and her family and warriors. It has become a safe haven for all those who seek home, shelter, or refuge. Visitors are always welcome here, but be warned: if you dare to threaten anyone under her charge you will have to face our Matriarch’s wrath, and those who do so are usually never heard from again.
Clan Safe Haven was born in Nature and still has deep roots there, but now it thrives and grows tall in Light. If you want to know more about us and our history, dear traveler, just read on and you will learn…
How it all began:
In the beginning, there was only one.
The story of Clan Safe Haven begins when a young Guardian named Brygid leaves her family and her clan behind to embark on her Search for her charge-to-be. She travels wide and far, but of all the dragons she meets on her journey, none triggers her protective instincts. After a while, she acquires a travel companion, an annoying young Mirror named Rynzin, who is fascinated by her and refuses to leave her alone.
Brygid finally gives up on trying to chase him away and after some shared fights and adventures, she has to admit (if only to herself) that Rynzin has evolved from barely tolerable nuisance to reliable companion and even friend. Unfortunately, he also managed to fall in love with her, but that is a problem Brygid is willing to ignore for the sake of their friendship.
During the following years, the two of them fight many battles together, becoming seasoned warriors in their own right, and they travel through all the flight territories of Sornieth, leaving both new enemies and new friends in their wake. Though she never speaks of it, even to Rynzin, Brygid’s perceived failure to find the charge meant for her fills her with steadily growing despair.
Finally, when they are resting on a blooming meadow next to a gurgling stream in the Everbloom Gardens, Brygid decides to give up on her Search. At least for now. Perhaps something is wrong with her, perhaps her charge hasn’t even been born yet, but whatever the case, Brygid is tired of chasing something that refuses to be found. So she will rest, and then try again, one day.
Having become very fond of Rynzin in the long time they have been together, Brygid agrees to nest with him. In the very moment when the first of their two eggs hatches and Brygid looks into the eyes of her firstborn son, it happens.
Protectiveness rises inside her like a wave, fierce, and sudden, and strong, and it feels as if she could take on anyone and everything, even an entire army of Emperors. That’s when understanding hits her at last.
Her charge was never supposed to be a single dragon, or even a place. No, her ward is going to be a family, no, even more than that: her charge would be an entire clan. Her heart singing with joy, Brygid draws herself up proudly, spreading her wings and roaring her challenge to the world.
In that moment, Clan Safe Haven was born.
Brygid’s clan would grow from a single small family to one of the largest clans in the Viridian Labyrinth. Soon, the lair of Clan Safe Haven was to be located among the other ancient lairs in the mighty, gnarled branches of the giant tree, the Behemoth, the heart of the Labyrinth, where its dragons lived in tree-caves carved by magic. Brygid has become the Clan Matriarch, always willing to take dragons under her wing who seek for a home, shelter, or merely a place to rest for a while, and always ready to protect those she considers to be her own by all means.
There was a time, after Clan Safe Haven had prospered for years under Brygid’s wise leadership, when some among us began to grow restless with wanderlust. They longed for travel and for seeing the world and when the wanderlust didn’t fade, but rather spread like a contagious disease, it was finally decided that, instead of splitting up, the entire clan would move into a new territory together.
Today, Clan Safe Haven has found a new home in Light, where some of us now live within ancient stone walls in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye, others dwell in nearby caves in the cliff face overlooking the ocean, and those of us who are closest to Nature in heart have found a new place to live in and among the Redwood trees near the cliff face.
No matter where we live now, and whatever place we may come to call home in the future, we are still protected and we will always be one clan.
