i remember reading about someones dragon, a former guardian who wanted to rid themselves of their attachment to their frankly evil charge, another dragon, by turning themselves into a pearlcatcher. the attachment to the charge ended up materializing as the pearl, and iirc no longer bothered the dragon. it was really well written.

Canon lore says this:
Baldwin's gradual transformation was fascinating. It wasn't uncommon for dragons to utilize magic-imbued scrolls to change themselves, but those worked nearly instantaneously, and were only successful if one focused all of their own internal magical energy into the process. Seeing someone go through it over the course of a month was very alien, and appeared quite physically taxing.
Or was it?
And just what exactly was he turning into? Magical scrolls could only hold the full-bodied countenance of dragon beings that already existed. There were myths and legends about cursed scrolls that could leave an unlucky dragon malformed and disfigured, but Tomo had never seen or heard of that occurring in her or her ancestors' lifetimes.
So I follow that :D

It's intentionally vague in my lore. Probably some form of magical surgery and more involved than just reading a scroll.
Most of my breed changes are retconned as the dragon always being that way, but I do have some changes that occurred in canon (often dragons who already have lore as being a particular breed, and then I wind up changing down the line).
- Guardian who had no innate urge to seek a charge, and also had dysphoria, so changed to a spiral
- Mirror who changed to a skydancer to help her acting career
- Wildclaw dancer who changed to a fathom because it was the trendy thing among entertainers in the city
- Everlux who ran away from home to join a gang of aethers and changed to aether as a final gesture of putting his family behind him
- Mirror with a midlife crisis where he changed to an obelisk, and then another midlife crisis (dragons live a long time ok) where he changed to a spiral
- Mirror who is canonically still a mirror, but a talented shapeshifter who generally favors serpentine forms (breed changed to auraboa)
- Nocturne who was severely injured and required major reconstructive surgery (breed changed to augment sandsurge)

In mine I don't really make it part of the lore, I did think once of making it as a "blessing" of sorts from a God but now it's really not even acknowledge in my lore, if i change a breed then i just write it as they were born that breed haha

I haven't really thought about it, mostly because I don't have plans to use many for my dragons aside from maybe a couple. I don't think any of the dragons in my lore would care much though..
I'm a g1 lair so breed/gene changes are the default for everyone, and in-lore they just aren't a thing. As far as their lore is concerned, my dragons as you see them are how they've always been!

I went a bit overboard in thinking about this, resulting in a sudden bit of inspo I penned down to go back and see every now and again. Eventually I'll actually have a dragon to integrate it to. I did my best to also imagine how it would integrate/implicate site mechanics.
The TL:DR of the idea: For me, breed/gene change scrolls are all a neutral form of transmutation magic, which is also how the different boons on site, potions, and augment stones are created. It needs to be locked into physical media to function.
There's a large-scale institution designed to help both raise awareness and quality-control the application of this magic.
If anyone wants a bit of reading, it's all here lol

breed change scrolls exist in my lore as a form of magic. whether or not a breed change happened in my lore depends on the dragon, with millie, she was an imperial and breed changed to an obelisk for work. with a tetra, she was always a ridgeback. theres a lot of interesting implications in breed changing, like if you changed into a pearlcatcher, does it feel like youre missing part of yourself because you cant possible have recorded the time before becoming a pearlcatcher into your pearl? if you are no longer a guardian, what does it feel like to lose the urge to protect your charge? stuff like that.

They don't. Them being a canon thing and not just a game mechanic always bothered me for some reason. I don't often breed change my dragons after I've settled on what their lore is, so if I do it's just like. a retcon to me
