For me it's always been the right colors >>> whether or not they're a g1. Especially for fandragons, even if I were to try to be a g1 lair, I'd make an exception for them because the things I tend to want out of fandragons are far too specific for any g1 (lots of xxx or xxy dragons, dragons with wildly specific color combos I refuse to budge on, wildclaws or imps, etc.)
What I mean is I like to focus more on the feeling of making a project with them than what their origin or offspring list looks like. It feels valuable because I put in the effort and I like the result, not because the word "none" is written instead of parents. (Though I also love to make breeding projects of fandragons with their canon parent names, and even some with canon accurate sibling names-- if that inspires you any.)

Yeah, this is exactly my thoughts, as well! I’m also big on fandragons, but they always end up needing some insane color combo that is exceptionally rare. And I have a TON of projects. If I waited around for the right Gen 1 to come along, I’d never get any of my fandragons finished.
I do like Gen 1’s, but they tend to be the exception, not the rule. I’m also incredibly picky.

Personally? Have a color-specific lair rule that EVERYONE has to follow. The only dragon I have that does not follow it is a Memorial Dragon who will not be moved from his place in my HibDen... his companion Memorial Dragon is proving hard to scry or I would have his brother with him by now. Triple-pink range G1's are pricey by themselves, not to mention my addiction to turning them into Coatls/WCs, lol.

I like to see G2+ dragons as a celebration of the community of this site. This game started with only gen 1 dragons, and over a decade those dragons and their descendants have been gened and bred to produce the dragons you see today. It's a kind of history that G1 dragons don't have.
G2+ also open up for so many more interactions and types of dragons.
I think my favorite instance was when I was going through Old Oaks for older dragons, and ran into a distant relative of a dragon I bought five years ago. I bought her immediately and reunited them. That's the kind of interaction you never get with G1s.

Maybe it'd help to chase special traits that aren't G1. People have mentioned special IDs and imps. You could also go after special lineages, or perhaps try a breeding challenge like pinkerlocke.
Although I would say the #1 motivator is realizing how much money you save :P

This is exactly how I feel too! Even a g2+ hatchling thrown into the AH was touched by someone else and for me have more substance than a randomly hatched G1 clean slate dragon.
To me it is like buying some pristine new plushie from the store vs someone donating their toy, or not being able to have it anymore, or maybe a kid couldn't even buy it and ended up leaving it on the wrong shelf. That later category just feels like it has more of something to it, you know? And it ends up meaning more to me no matter how little it is or how much I ignore all of it for lore reasons.
Its not like I still don't completely change the species and gene up most of my g2+ dragons too should you want to. They are frankly easier to tweak of you want to make small changes, they've got more of a human touch attached to them, they are just so much more free and interesting. I have my g1s too, but they are certainly more the exception in the end and not what I have the most fun with, since most of the appeal with them lies in the gamble and outside of that its just kind of manufactured value.
Thats just me and my own perspective though. Feel out what really matters to you. There is so much more on this site to value than g1 gambling.

Get over the none parents thing and get into breeding challenges. Once you break the chain of not caring about none parents (guess what, you can plan and make these names whatever you want and still make it look nice or lore relevant) there's a huge new way to play the game that's opened up to you.
People act like g1s are the ultimate projects to work on, but once you realize you can always put genes on any dragon and you now have the ability to create a dragon with ANY colors you want???? You will never go back
But first of all you gotta get over the perfectionist thinking of the none parents/fresh bloodline thing. Or get over gambling, lol.

I never was a g1 only lair but was trending towards it -- what got me hooked on g2+ though was the fact that the rng is more fun to me! Finding a pair that has a certain calculated percentage of rolling a certain combo (theres sites for this) and then renting a nest for the perfect eye color and having to pray its hit? Surprisingly fun actually. I hatch all the eggs in NOTN but after a while scrying to see what you can do with random colors doesn't have as much satisfaction as FINALLY hitting that combo you can't find for sale anywhere that you really want

If you want to do fandragons, G2+s have the benefit of being able to be arguably even more tied to the original- they have parents that, if you breed that dragon yourself, you can name.
I go after old dragons, rare colors (yes I know that rare colors will inevitably die out as people hatch more dragons- I like the novelty), and just what I find pretty/cool tbh.
...And also I'd rather have cash than spend like 2kg just acquiring a double G1- I don't even really like doubles or triples!

I play around with
Travelling Dragons. It's easier for me to get attached to these silly G2s+ wandering from lair to lair, versus most G1s nowadays. I've become very specific with my G1 tastes, and I rarely have 'dream combos' to hunt for anymore?
I've got some really tough ones. (antique/beige/cream) as an example, or an unbred 2L, and overpaid significantly for both (was always worth it for me. no regrets!), and now I simply lack the energy needed to continue at such a pace haha. I'm used to spending HOURS hunting for the perfect dragon on a daily basis, and I feel like I have so many dragons I'd consider 'perfect?' There isn't a huge difference between having 152 pretties vs 162 pretties.
Travelling Dragons FEEL different for me. It's a russian roulette, you might get a dragon with a very long and colored history, or a first time traveller! I love the idea of a legacy, or a lil 'bookmark' of my clan that gets to see other people's lairs, or giving someone else's dragon a story. I think it forces me to see past the objective appearences of dragons, and figure out what the previous owners would like to see the travellers become... and then write something.
It legit takes me just as long honestly, and I can't really profit from writing lore for these dragons... But they do provide a different experience for me than G1s and for that I deeply enjoy taking part in the thread :>
The community's also super sweet too!

I'm not entirely sure how helpful I can be, since I'm not super into Gen 1s. But I don't think this is a G1 problem - rather, it looks more like a perfectionism problem.
I tried a few things last year to get myself back into the game after a hiatus of similar length to yours. Started working on more lore, got in a bestiary completion mood, even bought a few nice UMAs here and there. But the most important thing I did last year was participating regularly in the Scry the Daily Exalt Bonus thread in Forum Fames. It forced me to incorporate new genes into how I wanted the dragons to look that I didn't consider otherwise. I even started a G1 project tab to get creative with the dragons I hatched for my egg hatching achievements.
Maybe it's just time for a new goal to go for in 2025. You've got a lot of options!
