Festivals were always a strange thing. Full of happiness and music, dancing and food, and everyone seemed to let their guard now. Even now, a shadow moved through the crowd, exchanging greetings with the partygoers, not raising even a single alarm as they walked in plain sight. In front of the guards, in front of witnesses, yet they were unwitnessed.

The target. A rich man. A powerful man. If he lived, an alliance would be forged in blood. Order would gain a foothold. The shadow could not, would not, allow that. They made their way to the groom, blade tucked into the sleeve of their shirt as they drew closer to their unsuspecting prey.

An offered hand. A friendly dance. The snake bit the target's hand. Then the groom sat, lifeless eyes watching as the festival drew to a close. No sound of death, no cry of pain. The shadow was gone, slipped out while merrymaking distracted the guests and guards alike. Hundreds of witnesses, yet they were unwitnessed.

In the night, a grieving cry sounded out. Alliance broken, blood spilled. Chaos gained a foothold.

Hey, hey, hey, it's Potato here, presenting you with *drumroll please* Sand and Blades. The above blurb was to get you interested, but here's the premise - Basically, there is this cult of bloodthirsty assassins that resides in the desert. They serve their Guildmaster, killing people and sapping their life force to offer to the Guildmaster, and seeking to undermine authority and rule, letting chaos run free. They are known as the Assassin's Guild, and bear no public mark.

Most people believe they are a myth, simply there to scare children. Their kills are attributed to faceless murderers and other criminal groups - secrecy is their greatest weapon. However one group, known as the Harbingers, has been investigating the Guild and is slowly closing in on the truth.

That's where you all come in - you will play as either an Assassin, or a Harbinger. The story will progress as the Assassin's Guild grows bolder in their attacks, and the Harbingers draw closer to the truth. Eventually, everything will culminate into one final showdown where the Assassin's Guild is either destroyed, or annihilates the only people who ever knew the truth.

Most of the members of the Assassin's Guild are members for life. Defectors are hunted down and executed, although a very small number of defectors have managed to escape and survive, although they are eternally in hiding. Members of the Harbingers do not have to be escaped Guild Members, but they can be if you want.

The Assassin's Guild ranks it's members as follows:
Apprentice
Initiate
Reaper
Blood Fiend
Shadow Walker
Guildmaster

An Apprentice is still in training, and often a child, and viewed by the guild as less than human. Their initiation ritual involves killing another Apprentice to prove their skills in combat, and they are not permitted to leave camp until they become an Initiate.
An Initiate is the lowest rank in the Guild - they are often sent on the "grunt" missions, essentially killing targets that are low risk, or gathering general intel for higher ranked Assassins
Reapers are still fairly low ranking, but they are trusted with more difficult missions, although their words don't hold much weight in the Guild.
A Blood Fiend is quite skilled in the art of killing - they sometimes infiltrate their targets manors as members of staff, or they act as long-time moles in the courts of lords, dukes, kings, etc. to send information back to the Guild to determine the best targets/
A Shadow Walker is the highest rank a mere Assassin can obtain - they are entrusted with the most dangerous missions, often times ones that take years to set up and complete. Their words hold great authority in the Guild, and they answer only to the Guildmaster. Shadow Walkers are responsible for finding new Apprentices for the Guild.
The Guildmaster is a semi-immortal being, somewhat akin to a modified Litch, that leads the Assassin's Guild. His motives are unclear to his underlings, and as you discover more about him, his profile will be updated.

The roleplay will start out in the desert of Hjialreach, and may progress to other regions. The capitol city is called Listchen, and the ruling queen is Olifa. The Harbingers currently have their main headquarters in Listchen, although being a native to the capitol is not a requirement. Listchen uses the nearby mountain runoffs and runoffs from the Hjialreach Highlands to store water in underground aquifers for the city.

NPCs
  • The Guildmaster - Not much is known about this individual. His existence is a closely guarded secret within the Guild, and he is its founder and leader. Assassins who bear his mark find themselves wholly devoted to his will, and share a telepathic link that allows the Guildmaster to locate them at all times.
  • Helana - The goddess of marriage and family. This domain includes non traditional families (adoption, half siblings, close friendships,) and the goddess is fiercely protective of orphans and the disadvantaged
  • Murek - The god of Chaos, his domain includes things like: time, free will, space, parties, festivals, and music. Murek often does things that seem strange to mortals, and treats his Celestial Spirits as his own children, rather than acting as a patron. Murek also is the cause of madness and mental disorders, alongside artistic talents.
  • Iludos - The god of logic and wisdom, Iludos favors a curious mind above all else. Mages and scientists alike pay homage to his gifts, and Iludos helped Murek create music by adding a mathematical component to the art, that fused chaos and logic into one expression.
  • Aarones - The god of commerce, and wealth in general, Aarones is often revered by nobles and royalty. Many royals have been dedicated to him as a way to secure their rule.
  • Shadrea - The goddess of war and the sister of Nosemus, Shadrea is the goddess of war and noble battle (think honor duels and the like.) Shadrea abhors murderers and people who flee from battle.
  • Nosemus - The goddess of peace and healing, and the sister of Shadrea, Nosemus favors the plights of beggars and the poor. In general, she wants mortals to resolve conflicts with peace, and has the most priests and clerics of any other diety.
  • Vira - The goddess of agriculture and nature, Vira is feverently worshipped by many natives of Hjialreach. Vira simultaneously represents the volatility of nature, and the mortal's taming of it via agriculture.
  • Kreoses - The god of craftsmen, Kreoses aids blacksmiths in the forge, sculptors with clay, and architects with buildings. Dwarves most often worship him, since he also is rumored to place ore in the earth.
  • Tabule - The Celestial Spirit of metal and fire, created by Kreosis, and in charge of actually being the one to place ore in the earth. Tabule will often inspire mortals to creating new alloys and also helps with inventors as well.
  • Noxo - The Celestial Spirit of the moon and hunt, created by the goddess Vira, Noxo is the patron of werewolves. The Spirit was greatly pleased by a hunter and granted the man one wish, and he wished to become one with the beasts, and so werewolves were created. Noxo is often levelheaded, and is most connected to the mortal world during the full moon.
  • Miula - The Celestial Spirit of lovers, Miula was created by Nosemus as a way to ease the pressures of the world. Miula often does not care about or respect the boundaries of marriage, viewing them as "made-up" rules, and she is the patron of nymphs. Helana is often intervening with this spirit's actions more than any other.
  • Infernus - The Celestial Spirit of blood, and the patron of murderers, created by Shadrea, Infernus is often spending his time trying to tempt mortals into murder. Interestingly, he helped the Guildmaster found the Assassin's Guild.
  • Novenuso - The Celestial Spirit of deals, paths, and messages, created by Aarones, Novenuso takes his duties quite seriously. He spends a lot of time around mortals, although he won't directly interact with them unless he needs to.
  • Illius - The Celestial Spirit of the sun and magic, created by Illudos, Illius actually created the world's first vampires. She was impressed with some mages and granted them immortality as a gift. Of course, then Infernus convinced the mages to drink human blood for more power, and so now vampires are cursed... Illius actually gets along with Noxo quite well as a friends, and created antimages as well as a way to balance magic.
  • Estara - The Celestial Spirit of plague and famine, Estara is the youngest spirit, and the one who will most often interfere with mortal affairs. She is a known prankster, and will often cause trouble for mortals to alliveate the boredom of immortality, although she is simply chaotic and not evil. Murek is her patron, however, she calls him "dad" rather than "master," which is what the other Spirits tend to do to their patron deities. Estara often spends her time in the desert, finding the hardy people to be quite amusing.
  • Bernvik - The Celestial Spirit of dreams and prophecy, also created by Murek, is Estara's brother. Bernvik also enjoy's pranking mortals, but since he is a little older than Estara, tends to be a bit more tempered and low key than his sister.
  • Lithia - The Celestial Spirit of grief, created by Helana to comfort families after losing members, and to guide spirits along the afterlife, Lithia is often depicted as an ever-weeping woman who plays a harp. While Lithia's primary responsibilities are to comfort the grieving and to guide mortal spirits, she also has the ability to curse mortals as well, causing great grief to unfortunate souls who stand against the gods.
Rumors
In taverns and dark alleys, insane beggars ramble about living shadows that suck the life from their victims, leaving chaos in their wake.

Regions
  • Hjialreach
    • Hjialreach Highlands - A brutal tundra to the far west of the main desert, harboring very few established settlements. There is a small peninsula at the westmost border that holds the region's largest town - a fishing town that often sees pirates and foreign visitors.
      • Aurora - A small town nestled in the brutal Hjialreach Highlands, the inhabitants have managed to gain a foothold against the harsh tundra. Most of the townsfolk feed themselves by hunting, and taking advantage of the brief fertile season for crops, and attribute their town's names to the magical lights that appear every night, localized only to this town. The lights are faintly visible in other regions of the highlands, but it's true beauty is only witnessed in Aurora.
    • Listchen - The bustling capital city of Hjialreach, Listchen was built around the largest desert oasis. It is a magical focal point of the desert, and native born people seem to be blessed with magical abilities. It is rumored that these abilities tend towards being sinister in nature, with many mages having the capabilities to use curses and hexes more strongly than any other place. It is the home of the Harbingers, a group of people who believe in the Assassin's Guild, and seek to destroy it. The royal family lives here, and the citizens of the city are fiercely loyal to them.
    • Guild Camp - It is unable to be located on any maps, and many people scoff at the mere mention of such a place, thinking it no more than fantasy. The Assassins live here when they are not on a mission, training their skills and heeding the orders of their master. Apprentices never leave the confines of the camp, and any attempts to do so are met with fierce punishment.
  • Aueris
    • Cicine - The capitol city of Aueris finds itself within a day's journey of the nearest port city, close enough that the two may one day merge. It is the center of commerce in the region, and is named after the daughter of the city's founder. The royal family lives here, although it is also home to many tradesmen and lower class.
    • Pheonix Isle - An island to the northwest, a magical focal point that generates many mages. There aren't many settlements inland due to the active volcano.
    • Italy Bay of Thieves - An island in the western sea, this place often does not ascribe itself to any one government. Citizens will rarely seek out the help of the national army or law enforcement, and it is home to many cutthroats and pirates. The place functions with a "don't ask, don't tell" policy on crime, since it seems that sending armies to this island full of thick foliage would be more trouble than it is worth to set straight.
    • Shade Village - A town in the wilds of Aureis, there seems to be of very little to note if one was simply to study a map. Nestled close to a forest that many superstitious people view as cursed, Shade Village actually has an academy that teaches aspiring scientists and healers. It is made from a castle that holds the echoes of a long forgotten past, with ghosts that whisper secrets and stories to the apt ear. Despite many attempts by cartographers to map Cygnus Academy, it seems to mysteriously fade into the background, and only survives by word of mouth, seeming more myth than real.
      • Shadow Forest - An area of great mystery, the Shadow Forest is so named for the perpetual dusk that covers the area. Be it high noon or stark midnight, the forest seems to be shrouded in perpetual twilight, stuck in between day and night. Bodies of water seem to have an otherworldly glow, and many plants are bioluminescent. Many who live near the forest report strange creatures within its depths, although nary an adventurer has ever come out of the woods. Whether it is a curse, or simply superstition that has gotten out of hand, there is no denying the strange allure of this enchanted forest.

Here's the TL;DR if you don't want to read all that: Check out the rules section to make sure you aren't breaking any, first and foremost. Secondly, this is a high-fantsy style roleplay, focused around the conflict between the Assassin's Guild and the Harbingers. The Assassin's Guild seems to only want to undermine established authorities, while the Harbingers seek to destroy the murderous cult.
